The Visorak were a breed of spider-Rahi created in service of the Brotherhood of Makuta.

History[]

Creation[]

The Visorak species was originally created by Makuta Chirox using viruses and Liquid Protodermis some time after the Great Disruption. Engineered to be an especially intelligent and destructive species, seven distinct breeds of Visorak were created. Proving highly strategic, the Visorak were known to have developed their own language and demonstrated unwavering loyalty to the Makuta.

For the purposes of testing their abilities, Chirox notably organized the Visorak into an army and unleashed them on the island in an act of open hostility towards the local population. With the majority of the native species wiped out by the rampaging Visorak, only a handful of survivors were able to escape the onslaught, Tobduk being one of them.

As a means of compelling the Visorak to converge on a given location, Makuta Chirox would later forge a small, golden crystal known as the Heart of the Visorak, an artifact capable of summoning all living Visorak to its given location when placed in the ground. Using the Heart of the Visorak to conquer the species, Makuta Gorast was able to further organize the species into the Visorak Horde in secret, the Brotherhood of Makuta's premier invasion force.

Visorak Horde[]

Over the course of the following centuries, the Brotherhood of Makuta's unsavory agenda became more clear to the Toa and the Order of Mata Nui, with knowledge of the Visorak Horde's existence and capabilities remaining close-guarded while Visorak slowly integrated into ecosystems around the various domes of the Great Spirit Robot. This period also saw a general decline across the Matoran Universe, as the Brotherhood began to pay less attention to preserving order and more to their own ambition. Roughly 1300 years ago, the Visorak Horde was known to have been ratified and entrusted to Sidorak and Roodaka, two high-ranking servants of the organization. As a result, the Horde came to make a string of provocative assaults across the Matoran Universe, hunting Toa and acquiring high-value artifacts in service of Makuta Teridax, who served as the Makuta of Metru Nui.

Roughly 1,300 years ago, however, Teridax's Toa Hagah caught wind of the growing militarization of the Visorak and discovered the ulterior motives of the Makuta. In an act of rebellion, the Toa Hagah attempted to smuggle the Kanohi Avohkii off of Destral and transferred it into the hands of their fellow Toa. However, only Norik and Iruini were able to escape an assault of Visorak led by Roodaka, leaving Gaaki, Bomonga, Pouks, and Kualus behind. Taken prisoner and guarded by the full might of the Visorak Horde, the four captive Toa were mutated by the effects of Roodaka's Rhotuka spinner, transforming into haggard and twisted Rahkshi-Turaga crossbreeds nicknamed Rahaga. Following a failed rescue attempt by Norik and Iruini, all six Toa Hagah were mutated by Roodaka and exiled from Destral. When it became clear that the Rahaga had been successful in their mission to smuggle the Kanohi Avohkii off the island, the Visorak Horde was instructed to hunt down the Rahaga.

Siege of Metru Nui[]

By the time of the Great Cataclysm, the Visorak Horde was mobilized to travel wherever it was needed. Following his incarceration in a Protodermis Seal, Makuta Teridax established telepathic contact with Roodaka, requesting the Visorak be brought to Metru Nui to protect the interests of the Brotherhood of Makuta. Making landfall, the Visorak made short work of the abandoned city, capturing and mutating the resident Rahi and encasing the devastated island in an infrastructure of webbing.

Some time after the Visorak occupation of the island, the local Toa Team resurfaced from a quest to find a new island to transport the Matoran to. Incapacitating the six Toa using Paralysis Rhotuka, the Visorak encased the captive Toa in cocoons strung to a complex network of webs around the Coliseum. At the command of Sidorak, the Toa were injected with Hordika Venom then allowed to fall from their cocoons. However, the mutated Toa were unexpectedly intercepted by the renegade Rahaga, who intervened to rescue the Toa during their descent. Enraged by this development, Roodaka commanded the Visorak to hunt the Rahaga and their Toa compatriots relentlessly, intent on harvesting them for their Elemental Powers and unleashing Teridax from the Protodermis Seal.

Dubbing themselves the Toa Hordika, the six Toa first set about retrieving Airship components from around the various districts of Metru Nui. After much preparation, however, Visorak patrol forces were able to break the deadlock that had been reigning on the theater of Metru Nui, capturing Rahaga Iruini and Toa Matau in Le-Metru. With the remaining Toa Hordika and Rahaga converging on Le-Metru, Sidorak commanded the Visorak to besiege the district while he set about summoning the Zivon, a legendary Rahi kept in the Zone of Shadows. While the arrival of a Tahtorak disrupted Sidorak's plan and resulted in the Zivon being returned to the Zone of Shadows, the Visorak ultimately lost considerable ground to the Rahaga and the Toa Hordika, who claimed a strategic patrol tower as a result.

A further string of close encounters with Visorak would later exacerbate an existing schism between the Toa Hordika, however, prompting Toa Vakama to be swayed by the primal aggression of the Hordika Venom. Recklessly abandoning his teammates, Vakama was intercepted by a Boggarak scout and cornered by a Visorak patrol. Captured, the errant Toa Hordika was taken to Roodaka, who saw him as a means to convert the other Toa into compliance. Commanding a squadron of Boggarak to throw themselves from the Coliseum in a demonstration of their obedience, Roodaka eventually swayed Vakama into service. Demonstrating his loyalty, Vakama set out to capture five of the Rahaga, bringing Gaaki, Bomonga, Pouks, Iruini, and Kualus to the Coliseum and offering them to Sidorak as testament to his allegiance. As a result, the Toa Hordika of Fire was offered a position presiding over the Visorak Horde as a high-ranking general.

In a decisive final battle, the remaining Toa Hordika would later launch an assault on the Coliseum, ambushing the Visorak Horde and finding themselves confronted by their former leader. Evading the Visorak long enough for Matau to engage Vakama, Toa Nokama, Whenua, Onewa, and Nuju eventually came to battle the Visorak legions directly, using a combination of their Rhotuka, weapons, and primal aggression to gain the edge. Once Norik had freed the other Rahaga, the final member of the Keetongu species would enter the battlefield, having been approached by the Toa Hordika for additional support in their confrontation. Attempting to subdue the legendary Rahi, Roodaka would take the opportunity to double-cross Sidorak, wounding Keetongu then leaving her compatriot to deal with his retaliation.

The Battle for Metru Nui would eventually draw to a close when the Visorak were able to surround the Toa and Rahaga. The conflict would then draw to a close with Roodaka entering the fray atop an enlarged Kahgarak and proclaiming that the Toa were her captives. Swayed by Matau over the course of their skirmish, Vakama would then turn on Roodaka, joining the Toa Hordika once again and formally disbanding the Visorak Horde in the process. Abandoning the battlefield, the Visorak carried out Vakama's final order and departed Metru Nui, attempting to integrate into ecosystems elsewhere in the Matoran Universe.

Abilities and Traits[]

Considered to be close genetic relatives of the Silver Chute Spiders, Visorak were able to inhabit a full range of habitats, with seven individual breeds created to master each environment of the Matoran Universe. Roughly the size of a Toa in length, all Visorak were quadrupedal and equipped both with unique traits and Rhotuka powers depending on their breed. All Visorak possessed the ability to fire Paralysis Rhotuka, however, which temporarily immobilized a target long enough for them to be encased in webbing.

Most notably, Visorak were equipped with powerful pincers, which enabled them to inject a target with a powerful agent known as Hordika Venom, which all Visorak were notably immune to. This chemical agent was a complex cocktail of proteins and neuro-toxins specifically designed to trigger mutation in a subject. Once stingers punctured the armor of a target, the venom would rush through the circulatory system, scrambling the genetic composition of a victim, resulting in a bestial transformation unlike Energized Protodermis or a Reconstitute at Random Kanoka. The effects of Hordika Venom could only be reversed by the Keetongu species, with no other known cures in the Matoran Universe.

With each of the seven breeds exhibiting distinct behaviors, Visorak possessed a number of hunting strategies and individual traits. The species was generally carnivorous in nature, often hunting down prey across all known ecosystems. Ambush predators by nature, Visorak tend to attack in patrol units and have been known to rely on camouflage to capture smaller Rahi and direct assault when dealing with larger predators.

Trivia[]

  • In the Matoran dialect, "Visorak" was often translated to "Stealers of Life".
  • Unlike most Rahi, Visorak do not possess the enzymes used to reconstitute withered vegetation, their glands instead used to produce webbing and Hordika Venom.
