The Ussal were a breed of crab-Rahi.
History[]
The Ussal were originally created by Makuta Tridax using viruses and Liquid Protodermis to be one of the species to inhabit the Matoran Universe. Genetically engineered to secrete a powerful enzyme found originally in Skakdi, the Ussal were intended to chemically reconstitute withered vegetation, along with many other Rahi.
Distributed across the Matoran Universe, the Ussal revealed themselves to be a docile and well-natured breed of Rahi, successfully adapting to the desert ecosystem and integrating themselves into Matoran life with relative ease, rejuvenating arid regions. Across the Matoran Universe, Ussal were often cultivated to rapidly regrow vegetation with their enzymes, with Matoran communities finding the species easier to care for than many larger Rahi species. Across the Matoran Universe, Ussal were also used to pull carts and haul cargo.
A significant population of Ussal was known to inhabit the shores of Metru Nui, with colonies residing indigenously on the shores of Ga-Metru. Proving especially cooperative with the Matoran, Ussal came to be tamed for transportation and used to haul cargo for Matoran laborers. With the growing urbanization of Metru Nui, however, Ussal came to be repurposed for the purposes of racing in Le-Metru. In an effort to preserve the species, a number of specimens were relocated to the Onu-Metru Archives.
In the years after the Great Cataclysm, the Ussal population of Metru Nui entered decline without Matoran to care for them. With the arrival of the Visorak Horde on the island, the overwhelming majority of Ussal specimens migrated to the island of Mata Nui through the Great Barrier, pursuing a less hostile habitat in the darker regions of the island, principally inhabiting the underground tunnels of Onu-Wahi.

When the Great Spirit Robot suffered critical damage, the surviving Ussal emigrated to Spherus Magna. Many have chosen the Great Barren as their primary habitat, though the Mata Nui populations seem to have migrated to the shores of Aqua Magna, near Matoran and Agori communities.
Pewku[]
While living on Metru Nui, Orkahm came into custody of a female Ussal named Puku. Believed to be older than most specimens and unusually colored, she often pulled carts for him and became his beloved pet.
Following the Great Cataclysm, Puku was brought to Mata Nui and given to Onepu, who favored her in the Great Ussal Race. After three consecutive victories, Puku would eventually come to be cared for by Takua and renamed "Pewku" owing to her role in defending the island during the Bohrok Invasion.
Some time after the defeat of the Bohrok-Kal, the Kanohi Avohkii resurfaced in Ta-Koro in the possession of Jaller. Partnered with Takua, who had found the Mask of Power in the lava chamber beneath the Ta-Koro Fortress, Pewku was commissioned to transport the adventurers on their journey to find the Seventh Toa.

Abilities and Traits[]
Ussal were large crab-Rahi most common in the northern islands. This hardy race of crustaceans was known for speed and durability, able to climb vertical surfaces and most often employed to pull Matoran wagons or haul large consignments of cargo. For many, Ussal carts were the preferred method of transportation across rural areas.
Ussal had a remarkable diet, feeding on the egg shells left by the Shore Turtles, who ironically fed on them. These two Rahi were commonly found in close proximity to one another. Because they are commonly hunted by poachers, Matoran often kept Ussal as pets.
Unlike the Hahnah and Keras, Ussal were widely adored and lived in harmony with whatever communities they found themselves in. These crustaceans were not difficult to raise, but required a great amount of care and affection to grow properly.
Trivia[]
- Ussal were one of the few Rahi specimens that were immune to Infected Kanohi owing to their strong natural desire to serve Matoran and sustain their given environment.
- Turaga Whenua often theorized that Ussal were distantly related to Manas at some point in their history.
