The Toa Mangai were a team of eleven Toa that defended the island of Metru Nui prior to the Great Cataclysm.
History[]
When the Kanohi Dragon was unleashed upon Metru Nui by the Dark Hunters, Turaga Dume summoned for help. Eleven Toa answered the call, coming from all corners of the Matoran Universe to defend the City of Legends from the threat of the Kanohi Dragon. After a month-long battle, the Toa defeated the Rahi beast and drove the Dark Hunters off Metru Nui. Rather than return to their homelands, the Toa agreed to remain on Metru Nui to protect it from future threats. In return, Turaga Dume dubbed them the Toa Mangai, after the Matoran word for "protector."
Over the course of the next few centuries however, the Toa Mangai began to break apart. After Toa Tuyet was banished for murdering Matoran and Toa Nidhiki betrayed the team to the Dark Hunters, the other members were mysteriously killed one-by-one, eventually leaving Toa Lhikan as the sole surviving member. In order to create more defenders of Metru Nui, Lhikan imbued his Toa energy into six Toa Stones and delivered them to six Matoran, creating the Toa Metru. As a Turaga, Lhikan would join the Toa Metru in confronting Makuta Teridax and ended up sacrificing his life to save Toa Vakama.
