The Nightwatcher is a side-story featuring Tomoe and a tale he tells about "The Nightwatcher" to the gathered Matoran and Agori. It is the third published side-story in the Ignika Universe Saga.

Story[]

“Gather ‘round, villagers,” the lime green Turaga Tomoe said. “Yes, yes, sit closely to your Matoran and Agori family.”

The fire crackled and popped, which hushed the crowd seated on the wooden logs around the fire.

“Now then,” started Tomoe. “Let us begin before the night falls.

“Long ago there was a legendary warrior, who defeated evil with a single swipe of their sword. None could come close to their swordsmanship or elemental power control. A glance from this legend would paralyse the Makuta, demonic beings, fear flooding their corrupted heart and anger for their fallen comrades flushing their mind.

“The Matoran admired this legend. Some say they knew them personally, but that was long ago, in a much darker time. This legend lives on. They migrated with you Matoran onto Spherus Magna here.

The Turaga stopped for a moment and looked at sun before it faded behind the horizon.

“If you are unlucky enough, you might encounter someone on this very dark night. A few moments after the sun falls and we are plunged into darkness, this legend rises again. But this time, they have a very different reason to swing their blade.

“In the times of war, there are only evil sides. ‘Good’ is decided by the victor. This legend has been forgotten with time. They know not of the good or evil that crept with us to Spherus Magna and they do not care about the good and evil that already resides here.

“They are… The Nightwatcher.”

The Matoran and the Agori wore blank faces. Tomoe’s knew his storytelling left much to be desired, but he pressed on.

“The Nightwatcher keeps the darkness safe until there is light again in the morning. They swing their sword at the vile creatures that follow us and the evil threats that come for us. But in the black of night, good and evil look the same.

“This is why, I tell you, my dear Matoran and Agori family,” Tomoe leaned closer to the fire, so his mask was covered in odd angled shadows. “Never go out at night, else the Nightwatcher will make short work of you!”

The fire roared upwards and sparks were thrown around the crowd. The Matoran and Agori yelped. Some fell back over the logs, some looked at the sunset with caution.

“Be gone! Run, my family!” Tomoe shouted as he pointed to the village. “The Nightwatcher is here!”

A few Matoran screamed and they fled to their huts.

“Tomoe,” said a Toa as he walked from the shadows. “Remind me why we do this again?”

“Toa Yunak,” replied the Turaga. “The Nightwatcher is very real. I have seen him, with my own old eyes.”

“Yeah, right,” said Yunak. He waved his blade as he rolled his eyes, and the fire collapsed in on itself. “Let’s get back then, before the Nightwatcher finds us.”
