The Fall was an alternate timeline in which the Toa Nuva and Toa Mahri were able to stop Makuta Teridax from taking over the Great Spirit Robot, resulting in the failure of Mata Nui to reform Spherus Magna and the continued existence of the Matoran Universe.
History[]
Early Differences in Matoran Universe[]
As compared to the core reality, minor differences existed in the Matoran Universe, its nature, and the nature of its inhabitants. Foremost, the Red Star, though it existed, was not a resurrection machine for the inhabitants of the Matoran Universe. Rather, it served as both the propulsion system for the Great Spirit Robot and the seat from which the Great Being Whakaawe watched the Matoran Universe, astrally projecting his essence within it as an unnamed Ta-Matoran. Velika existed in this timeline as well, but neither Whakaawe nor Velika knew of the other's existence. Additionally, rare examples of Matoran who did not match their element's primary gender existed- for instance, male Ga-Matoran and female Ko-Matoran could exist, albeit in limited numbers. Additionally, the inhabitants of the Matoran Universe were endowed with the ability to feel romantic love, though they still had no need to reproduce and as such were still unable to experience true sexual attraction.
Furthermore, the timescale of the Matoran Universe is compressed by a factor of 20- its 100,000 years of existence become 5,000 years, and all other timespans are adjusted accordingly. All canon historical events still occur in order and as they normally did, but on this compressed timescale.
Prior Events[]
Some three years prior to the awakening of the Toa Mata and the ensuing events, Makuta Imperas, the Makuta of Lanai Nui and Teridax's confidante, was tasked with the creation of a "resurrection machine" to resurrect Teridax should he ever die. This task, of course, was a useless distraction designed to remove Imperas as a factor in Teridax's plan, but Imperas took it very seriously and set about it with his Makuta associates Myxine, Issuren, Ophion, and Kundai. To power the experimental resurrection machine, the five Makuta kidnapped much of the Su-Matoran population of Lanai Nui, altered the Matoran to awaken their latent Plasma powers, and tried to use them as living batteries. When the experiment proved a failure and the Matoran rebelled, leading to their demise, Teridax selected the five involved Makuta to be part of a contingency plan should his plan fail. This plan, of course, was intended to quietly kill Imperas and his associates; the five of them would be stored under Lanai Nui in stasis to awaken in six years. Had Teridax taken over the Matoran Universe in this timeline, he would have covertly killed them via an earthquake. This was the fate that befell Imperas and his associates in the core timeline.
Point of Divergence[]
The point of divergence leading to the creation of The Fall alternate timeline was a sudden change of heart in Makuta Krika. At some point after the Toa Nuva arrived in Karda Nui to fight the Brotherhood of Makuta's invasion, Krika's misgivings about Teridax's plots reached a critical point. Krika secretly contacted Gali and surrendered himself as a prisoner; when he was brought back to the Toa Nuva he told them everything about Teridax's plan and what would happen shortly. Krika then committed suicide. Tahu, Gali, Pohatu, and Takanuva left Karda Nui at once and contacted the Order of Mata Nui with this information; the Order sent an army led by Helryx into Karda Nui to assist Lewa, Onua, and Kopaka and sent Tahu, Gali, and Pohatu to Metru Nui to stop Teridax once and for all.
Tahu, Gali, Pohatu, Takanuva, and the Toa Mahri journeyed beneath the Coliseum and eventually made their way towards the Core Processor. Upon encountering Teridax's essence, a lengthy and destructive fight occurred. Pohatu, Kongu, and Nuparu were the first to fall in battle; Hewkii and Hahli soon followed. Deciding to sacrifice everything, Tahu, Gali, Jaller, and Takanuva performed joint Nova Blasts. The combined blast was enough to instantly kill Tahu and Jaller, but Teridax's essence was stunned and partially driven out of the Core Processor. At that instant, the Toa Nuva in Karda Nui reawakened the Great Spirit Robot- the ensuing rush of energy incinerated Teridax's spirit and killed him. Takanuva and Gali were the only survivors and emerged onto the surface with heavy hearts.
Consequences[]
Unfortunately, the Toa Nuva and Toa Mahri's heroic effort had the effect of frying most of the Great Spirit Robot's processing circuitry. Unable to fully awaken, the Great Spirit Robot fell to its knees and onto its back once more on Aqua Magna. The functioning of the Matoran Universe continued unabated, but it was rendered unable to complete its task of reforming Spherus Magna as a consequence. The whereabouts and status of Mata Nui's spirit remain unknown. It is presumed he is sealed within the Ignika, but the Ignika's whereabouts have vanished as well.
Without Teridax to govern the Matoran Universe, the Makuta Contingency survived.
Additionally, the Toa Lanai II were formed- in the core timeline, its would-be members evacuated onto Spherus Magna and remained Matoran.
