The Taku were a breed of small, duck-like Rahi incapable of flight.
History[]
The Taku species were originally created by Makuta Kojol using viruses and Liquid Protodermis to be one of the species to inhabit the Matoran Universe. Genetically engineered to secrete a powerful enzyme found originally in Skakdi, the Taku were intended to chemically reconstitute withered vegetation, along with many other Rahi.
Distributed across the Matoran Universe, the Taku revealed themselves to be a docile and well-natured breed of Rahi, successfully adapting to the desert ecosystem and integrating themselves into Matoran life with relative ease, providing eggs and rejuvenating arid regions. Across the Matoran Universe, Taku were often cultivated to rapidly regrow vegetation with their enzymes, with Matoran communities finding the species easier to care for than many larger Rahi species.
In Metru Nui, there was known to exist a significant Taku population in the sparser habitats of the Ga-Metru coastline. In an effort to preserve the species, a number of specimens were relocated to the Onu-Metru Archives.
Following the Great Cataclysm, the Taku population continued to reconstitute the Ga-Metru coastline in the absence of Ga-Matoran. With the arrival of the Visorak Horde upon the island, however, the overwhelming majority of Taku specimens migrated to the island of Mata Nui, pursuing a less hostile habitat in the region of Le-Wahi and coming to principally inhabit the forest floor.
Following the Battle of Bara Magna and subsequent Reformation of Spherus Magna, the majority of the Matoran Universe's Taku population was evacuated onto the surface of a new world, though several colonies remained trapped. Seeking to rescue Rahi, the Toa Hagah were known to have been instrumental in transporting many different species from the decaying Matoran Universe, allowing the Taku to flourish in the aquatic biomes of Spherus Magna.

Abilities and Traits[]
Generally, the Taku species was known to have lived in harmony with the Matoran population, with many communities choosing to tend to small clusters of Taku.
Taku prefer calm, shallow sanctuaries, but could be found in almost any body of freshwater across the Matoran Universe. They could also found in saltwater and brackish water and are commonly found in wetlands.
Wild Taku conventionally roam coastal regions of the Matoran Universe, migrating in search of water in small flocks, typically containing less than a dozen members. Generally, members of the species will eat small fish, mollusks, crustaceans, grass, weeds, algae, aquatic plants, Protodites, and seeds
