Mata-Nui has no dominion here.” –Onnyx

The Shimmering Seas was a vast region of islands separated by saline-Cascatine water. Its oceans and landmasses were populated by organic fauna and flora, as well as Biosynth species and a number of migrant species from the Matoran Universe.

Name[]

The term “Shimmering Seas” was in reference to the silvery color of saline-Cascatine water as light hit its surface. The name “Shimmering Seas” was created by Scattans, and was eventually accepted as the term denoting the region by most sentient species living in it. However, most sentient Biosynth species of the region gave the oceans surrounding their islands similar names in their own languages prior to the widespread use of the Scattan name. Matoran who migrated to islands in the Shimmering Seas originally mistook the water for liquid Protodermis, before giving their own name for the waters, and eventually accepting the Scattan name also.

Location[]

The exact location of the Shimmering Seas in relation to the Matoran Universe was unknown. Beings from the Matoran Universe that migrated into the Shimmering Seas found their navigational systems compromised after their ships passed through Gray Fogs, prevalent in the outermost waters of the region. In most cases Matoran Universe beings simply became lost after entering Gray Fogs, and chose to settle on the nearest islands they could find rather than searching for a way out of the Shimmering Seas.

Some Matoran settlers suspected that the Shimmering Seas was a region in the Southern Islands of the Matoran Universe. Others pointed to the apparent absence of Spirit Stars even as Toa were active, suggesting to some that the Shimmering Seas was not part of the Matoran Universe, and possibly another universe entirely.
