Sauti is a Toa of Sonics who lives in a lighthouse on Voya Nui.

History[]

Sauti has no recollection of his early life. His first memories are of waking up on the cliffs of the Tren Krom Peninsula with no recollection of how he got there. He knew his name, his abilities, and his equipment, but had no idea of where he was. He stumbled through the woods and came across Makuta Gorast's fortress. He was granted an audience with the Makuta, who was wondering why a lone Toa was travelling in her domain. After using her powers to read Sauti's mind, Gorast offered him a position on her Toa Hagah team.

Sauti served as a member of this team for over 100 years. During that time, he went on multiple missions for Gorast, including serving as her bodyguard on a trip to Stelt, where they survived an apparent assassination attempt at the Coliseum of Kradit. 27 years after the Great Cataclysm, Sauti and the rest of Gorast's Toa Hagah team were sent to Voya Nui to retrieve the Kanohi Ignika.

Mission to Voya Nui[]

Sauti's team arrived on Voya Nui without incident, their Toa Cannisters washing ashore in the Voya Nui Bay before trekking inland to Mount Valmai. They were stopped by Axonn and Brutaka, who attempted to dissuade them from proceeding with their quest. The team feigned compliance, but later Sauti would sneak back and use his Mask of Psychometry on Brutaka's weapons to locate the entrance to the 777 Stairs. Before their deception could be noticed, the team hurried to descend the Stairs.

They first encountered the Zone of Nightmares, where Sauti was taunted by his shadow about his missing memories. However, Vaxter deduced that they were facing illusions and helped Sauti overcome his. Sauti then used his sonic powers to help Erde overcome his own illusion. Further down the steps, the team found the Three Doors of Virtue. During the debate that followed, Zekle punched Lune when she discovered he'd kept crucial information about the nature of their mission from them. The sound of the impact caused Sauti to briefly black out, but he recovered quickly enough to descend through the Door labeled Destiny.

In the Chamber of Death, Sauti used his Mask of Psychometry and saw Velika carrying the Ignika up the Stairs. Lune insisted that he could still sense the Ignika below, and the team decided to continue onwards. Sauti saw Vaxter using his Mask of Mutation to subtly mutate Zekle in order to push her to kill Erde. When they rested after leaving the Chamber of Death, Sauti used his Kanohi and discovered that Vaxter had secretly used his mask on Zekle multiple times, and assisted Gorast with experiments on Matoran behind their backs. Sauti threatened to reveal Vaxter's true nature, but Vaster blackmailed Sauti into keeping quiet by threatening to reveal that Sauti had withheld the crucial information that Brutaka was strangely fixated on the Ignika, and that he lied about seeing a vision in the Zone of Nightmares. In order to keep trust from completely fracturing, Sauti did not reveal Vaxter's actions to the rest of the team.

During the battle with Umbra, Gora sacrificed herself to save Sauti's life, using her Kanohi Crast to propel him to safety. However, the impact of his landing caused Sauti's Kanohi to crack, rendering it useless and leaving him weak. Before Sauti could succumb to his injuries, Vaxter used his Mask of Mutation to alter Sauti's physiology so that he did not require a Kanohi to maintain his strength, but in doing so prevented Sauti from using the power of a Great Mask. Sauti attacked Vaxter for his actions, but was stopped from severely injuring Vaxter by Lune, who insisted they enter the Chamber of Life and complete their mission.

Within the Chamber of Life, the team was confronted by the final guardian of the Ignika: the mask itself, using Erde's body as its avatar. Sauti and Lune confronted the guardian while Vaxter attempted to stop Zekle from fleeing. Sauti and Lune managed to trap 'Erde' underneath a collapsed section of wall, triggering Erde's fear of being buried alive and incapacitating the guardian. Lune removed the Ignika, but before they left Erde's dying body muttered a strange warning about the Great Beings and the Ignika to Sauti.

When Sauti and Lune emerged, they were immediately attacked by Zekle, who had been mutated into a monstrous insect-like Rahi by Vaxter. With Zekle's help, Vaxter almost managed to overpower Sauti and Lune and take the Ignika, which he planned to bring to Gorast. Sauti stopped him by replicating the hissing call of a Nui-Kopen, sending Zekle into a rage that carried both her and Zekle over the edge into the lava below.

Sauti and Lune climbed the stairs with minimal difficulty, only interrupted by the appearance of an ominous warning burning on the Stairs within the Zone of Nightmares. When they reached the surface, it became clear to Sauti that Lune had been influenced by the Ingika, and was still bent on bringing it to Gorast. Sauti decapitated Lune on the beach after the Toa of Light had transformed into a Turaga.

Life on Voya Nui[]

Sauti took the Ignika and the Toa Stones Lune had created and settled into an abandoned lighthouse on the Cape of No Hope. From there he guarded the Ignika from anyone who came to Voya Nui to retrieve it. He also occasionally visited the Matoran of the Cliffside village, though the first time he visited he alarmed them with his mask-less appearance. He asked one of the local Matoran, Izer, to reforge his Kanohi so he would be less unsettling to the villagers.

Sauti maintained a contentious relationship with Axonn over the years, as the titan wished for him to return the Ignika to the 777 Stairs. Sauti refused, and at several points came to blows over the disagreement. About four years after Sauti had arrived, one of these disagreements led to Sauti revealing his vision of Velika in the Chamber of Death. Axonn identified Velika, and told Sauti he had died when Mahri Nui had sunk into the Bay. This conversation prompted Sauti to reconsider the Ignika, and he finally touched it for the first time. When he did, he spoke to Iiliara, who attempted to convince him to bring the Ignika to Gorast. Sauti refused, and hurled the Ignika into the Bay.

Alternate Universes[]

Duet Universe[]

Sauti was one of the lucky few Toa to survive Teridax's initial onslaught, taking refuge in a small jungle tribe village in the far south. He was accepted by the Agori that lived there and protected them and a small, motley assortment of Matoran immigrants for the next three years. Eventually, Teridax's generals decided to eradicate the village that had resisted them for so long and sent a large contingent of Skrall and Skakdi warriors to destroy it. Sauti ordered the villagers to run south until they found safety, stalling the warriors for as long as he could. When he was sure they had gotten far enough away he unleashed a sonic nova blast that shook everything within a mile radius apart at the atomic level, including himself. Later, Nuparu and Balta based one of their War Automatons - model Sauti: 73 - after the fallen Toa, though it proved unusable during the testing phase.

Personality and Traits[]

Sauti has no recollection of what he was like before worked for Gorast, and much of his present persona is built upon that absence. He is quiet and reserved, unwilling to delve to deep into conversation and accidentally revealing his secret. He doesn't know why it feels important that no one knows about his missing past, but something within him is determined to keep from revealing it. His hyper-sensitive audio receptors give him a reasonable and not-entirely false excuse for avoiding prolonged conversations. Even in his Toa Hagah team, Sauti was a solitary individual. He was close friends with his brothers and sisters, but often kept his thoughts close to his chest.

Despite being closed off, Sauti's sonic abilities give him remarkable insight into those around him. From the catch of a breath to the skip of a heartlight, he can often read subtle tells of others' moods and intentions. He's wary of letting this influence him too much, only acting on this information when he feels he must or he has enough context for it to be useful. This insight does make him very effective when he does need to handle a social situation himself.

At his core, Sauti has a strong sense of right and wrong. This often leads to conflict with his more pragmatic nature, and he is tormented by guilt over his past actions. His killing of Lune weighs on him in particular, and he feels deep regret of serving Gorast for so long after learning she was experimenting on Matoran and manipulating her Hagah team to her own sinister ends. This guilt has driven him to isolate himself from the other inhabitants of Voya Nui.

Powers and Equipment[]

As a Toa of Sonics, Sauti has the ability to absorb and create sound waves. This can be a precise or general action, from a single wavelength to every sound in the immediate vicinity. He can also use his powers in other ways, such as echolocation or shaking things apart. Additionally, Sauti's abilities give him a heightened sense of hearing. While this gives him an advantage over his opponents, it also makes him vulnerable to loud noises and thus his own powers. For this reason he only uses his strongest elemental powers when absolutely necessary.

Sauti wears a Mask of Psychometry, though alterations made to his body by Vaxter's Mask of Mutation has rendered him incapable of using it (with the benefit of not requiring a Great Kanohi to survive). This mask is the same one he has worn his whole life, having been reforged by Izer after Sauti settled on Voya Nui. He currently wields Vaxter's Scything Spear as his primary Toa Tool and weapon, which he claimed after losing his Supersonic Spear in the heart of Mount Valmai.

Trivia[]

  • Sauti was originally intended to appear in a short serial named A Message in a Bottle, meant to serve as an introduction before his appearance in Hellbound in 2015. In that story, Sauti would have received a message from and old teammate asking for his aid in Mahri Nui. Parts of Sauti's original backstory were eventually be reworked into 777 when it was written and released in 2022.
