"A blinding flash of light struck the Matoran square in the face, stinging his eyes. He cried out in pain as he tried to adjust to the glare, but it was no use. He could feel his retinas burning. It had struck him like a solid blow. From his days as a Maskmaker, he knew exactly what he was dealing with: a Great Kanohi Ruru."

The Kanohi Ruru was the Mask of Night Vision, a mask that enabled its bearer to see in low light conditions or even total darkness, projecting an intense beam of light that illuminated a target. While the mask offered enhanced vision and limited X-Ray capabilities, it left the bearer sensitive to sudden flashes of light and made it difficult adapt back to regular lighting conditions.

The Kanohi Ruru traces its origins back back to some of the earliest mask-making techniques adopted on Spherus Magna, where an unclear number of Ruru masks were created for the Matoran populace. At this point in the history of the Matoran Universe, the Ruru became heavily associated with Onu-Matoran, who held the mask up as a symbol of their elemental discipline.

Over the 100,000 year span of the Matoran Universe's functionality, the Ruru became a particularly wide-spread Kanohi. Favored in particular by Toa of Earth, the Ruru was also know to be sought after by Toa of Water, who notably considered the Ruru a practical Kanohi for navigating through darker underwater regions and warding off potential aquatic predators.

In Metru Nui, a Ruru could crafted with relative efficiency using Teleport and Enlarge Kanoka disks. Given the ease with which Ruru could be created, however, the Kanohi became somewhat common in wider Matoran society, often sold for cheaper prices.

At various points in history, Mask-Makers often craft Ruru in the shape of the Avohkii (or interpreted shapes) in attempts to price gouge. Eventually, this practice died out and became an infamous scam across the Matoran Universe.

Quite notably, an Onu-Matoran named Whenua was known to have sported a Ruru during his time as a Toa Metru, one of the Matoran Universe's final and most prominent Toa Teams, marking a decisive footnote in the mask's history.
