The Protocairn were a breed of Matoran mutated into amphibious reptile-like creatures by Energized Protodermis.

History[]

Although widely considered to be Rahi, the first Protocairns came into being when a group of Matoran subjected themselves to Energized Protodermis in the Southern Island Chain. Transformed by the substance, the first colony of Protocairns were conceived. Following extensive experimentation on these early specimens by Makuta Mutran, the Brotherhood of Makuta was able to nurture the species and encourage it to procreate at a fundamentally developmental stage of its existence.

Distributed across the various environmental domes of Matoran Universe, the Protocairns revealed themselves to be an ill-tempered but nonetheless intelligent species, successfully adapting to aquatic and temperate ecosystems around the Great Spirit Robot and establishing themselves as natural enemies of the Zyglak.

Although the species began to establish itself within the various coastal biomes of the southern Matoran Universe, the Protocairn population remained somewhat sparse, generally thriving in small packs. Approximately 70,000 years ago, however, a particularly large concentration of Protocairns developed on the Northern Continent, threatening several Matoran settlements in the region. Although gathered under natural circumstances, the Protocairn were dispersed by the combined efforts two local Toa teams, notably including Toa Norik and Toa Varian in their ranks.

Roughly 15,000 years ago, a swarm of Protocairn notably assaulted the coastal regions of Metru Nui. Warded off by the local Toa team, the reptilian invaders suffered many casualties, their carcasses eventually forming the land upon which the Great Temple would be constructed.

When the Great Spirit Robot suffered critical damage, the surviving members of the Protocairn populations emigrated to Spherus Magna. Many have chosen Aqua Magna as their primary habitat, though the Metru Nui populations seem to have migrated onto land in search of the remaining Visorak scattered across the ecosystem.

Abilities and Traits[]

Abundant in the aquatic and more temperate southern regions of the Matoran Universe, Protocairn characteristically thrive in close proximity to the coastline and are able to withstand extreme temperatures. As prominent predators on the handful of islands they inhabit, the species has been known to eat almost anything, including Infernavika, Vako, and Hoto. Parakrekks are the most noteworthy prey of the species, markedly following Protocairn herds and scavenging the rubble left in the wake of their rampage.

Protocairns possess natural Rhotuka launchers, enabling them to fire Rhotuka that disrupt the signals traveling down the neurological pathways of a target, disrupting their senses and leaving them in an unconscious state.

The species also possesses the curious ability to merge with the landmasses they decompose on, spawning new megaliths of rock from their organic material. While absent in the first generation of Protocairns, later iterations came to access this genetic marker after Makuta Mutran's experimentation, his desire being for the species to restore the land they destroyed and provide a sustainable alternative to coastal erosion.
