The Piraka are a group of six Skakdi thugs who defected from the Dark Hunters and banded together in a failed attempt to acquire the Kanohi Ignika, the Mask of Life, on the island of Voya Nui. The group later became infamous as the self-proclaimed rivals to Kuurk's Empire.

History[]
The six Skakdi who eventually became the Piraka were inducted into Dark Hunters coincidentally at the same time; two of their members, Hakann and Vezok, were thieves that inadvertently competed with the Dark Hunters to acquire the Makoki Stones, while the rest were gathered from various places in the Matoran Universe. Prior to the two joining, Ancient called Vezok a "Piraka", a Matoran obscenity meaning "thief and murderer". The Skakdi were often paired on missions together, such as releasing the Kanohi Dragon. At one point, five of them attempted to execute a rebellion, but were quickly disciplined by the Shadowed One.
Eventually, the Skakdi left the Dark Hunters, taking on the term Ancient had called them, and set out to loot whatever treasures they could potentially come across. On one of their travels, Hakann stumbled upon a weapon called the Spear of Fusion. As he was messing around with it, he accidentally shot Vezok with it, resulting in the creation of a proposed seventh member, Vezon.
Vezon would soon ditch the team immediately afterwards however to pursue his own random desires, taking the Spear of Fusion with him.
The group then decided to travel to the island of Voya Nui to try and acquire the Kanohi Ignika, Mask of Life, in an attempt to later sell it for money which they intended to use to make their very own armed palace. Together, the Piraka managed to kill Umbra, the Mask's guardian, and managed to reach the mask's chamber. However, when Zaktan picked it up, the mask suddenly flew up the staircase and onto the surface. The Piraka chased after the Mask of Life, but the Ignika stayed far ahead of them that they could not touch it. The mask eventually reached the coast and plunged into the sea, robbing the Skakdi of their selfishly greedy intentions.
The Piraka then began infighting with each other over whose fault it was for letting the mask disappear into the ocean. Their bickering was swiftly interrupted shortly afterwards by the eruption of Mount Valmai, causing the six Skakdi to flee the area.
Over a century later after their failed attempt to steal the Ignika, The Piraka raided an abandoned warehouse located in the ruins of the Order of Mata Nui's headquarters on Daxia, where they found loads of valuable weapons, tools, and Kanohi masks. They were eventually able to sell their findings to a Vortixx who was interested in purchasing the items for millions in cash. The Piraka rejoiced in their success and used their money to create a huge armed palace for themselves called the Piraka Stronghold. After the Stronghold's construction was completed, the Piraka resumed their greedy tactics, plundering villages of their riches and using them for their own slimy deeds.
This lasted until they tried stealing from Kuurk's Empire. As they attempted to break in the organization's fortress, the team was swiftly defeated by the combined efforts of Axonn and Brutaka. Zaktan then swore revenge on the two titans and Kuurk personally before they retreated.
The Piraka snuck their way into Helvean when the organization moved its headquarters there, and as a result, they have become self-proclaimed rivals to the former organization.
