Onolo vine eels are a species of Rahi known to inhabit the island jungles of Gahru Nui.
Biology[]
Onolo have long, flexible bodies and no limbs. Their spines are lined with armor plating and purple spikes. They are equipped with large fangs and a hooked tail to hang from tree branches. Their bodies are capable of producing a sweet-smelling nectar as well as storing electricity. Being a terrestrial fish, they possess gills and require highly humid conditions in order to perform respiration.
Behavior[]
Onolo spend most of their lives hanging from trees in order to camouflage with vines. The scent of their nectar-like saliva lures prey such as birds and large insects. When prey draws near, they deliver an electric shock through their fangs and spine to induce paralysis, allowing the eel to drain its victim's energy with ease. They are generally very lethargic creatures, in order to preserve their energy and build up their stores of electricity. Onolo only retreat to the forest floor in an emergency, such as the threat of a larger predator, and hide in the underbrush until the danger passes. They are extremely reluctant to do so, since it requires a great deal of energy to climb back up the trees and return to their perch.
Habitat[]
Onolo are primarily found in the deep, humid jungles of Gahru Nui. They require thick vine coverage in order to properly camouflage themselves. A majority of their natural habitat was destroyed during the shattering of the original main island of Gahru Nui and the environment shifted on many of the resulting splinter islands. Further habitat destruction wrought by the invading Crumaki hordes has also led to a steep decline in their numbers.
Relationship with Other Species[]
The Vo-Matoran of Gahru Nui commonly hunted the Onolo eels for their energy stores. This tribe was best suited to resisting the eels' electric attacks and successfully catching them. Two Matoran that were known to do so where Raku and Raneh, who frequently partook in hunts before being forced to flee the island. The eels were were caught using long hooks and necks and were captured alive before being taken back to their villages, where they were tamed and sold ass living energy sources.
In Captivity[]
Matoran feed the eels a specific diet in order to alter their behavior. When provided with a stable source of food, Onolo no longer need to save their energy for catching prey, and become much livelier creatures. With the proper training and safety equipment, Matoran can even ride on their backs, both on land or in shallow waters.
