The Nui-Rama were a breed of insect-Rahi.
History[]
The Nui-Rama species were originally created by Makuta Bitil using viruses and Liquid Protodermis to be one of the species to inhabit the Matoran Universe. Genetically engineered to secrete a powerful enzyme found originally in Skakdi, the Nui-Rama were intended to chemically reconstitute withered vegetation, along with many other Rahi.
Distributed across the Matoran Universe, the Nui-Rama revealed themselves to be an ill-tempered breed of Rahi, successfully adapting to several ecosystems around the Great Spirit Robot and establishing themselves as natural enemies of the Nui-Kopen.
In Metru Nui, Nui-Rama typically established hives in the less developed regions of Le-Metru, sharing a habitat with the Silver Chute Spider and Cable Crawler. As the forces of modernization began to sweep the island, however, the Nui-Rama population would prove a constant nuisance to the Le-Matoran, often damaging Chute services. Frequently, Vahki Vorzakh would be dispatched to apprehend Nui-Rama squadrons only for the Rahi to scatter before capture.
Following the Great Cataclysm, the Nui-Rama population emerged from hiding and fed upon the Protodermis of the damaged Chute systems. With the arrival of the Visorak Horde upon the island, however, the overwhelming majority of Nui-Rama specimens migrated to the island of Mata Nui, pursuing a less hostile habitat in the region of Le-Wahi and coming to establish a prominent hive deep in the jungle. Following the arrival of Matoran upon the island, the Nui-Rama were known to have come into confrontation with several Le-Matoran, but only when provoked.
Following the arrival of Makuta Teridax on the island, the Nui-Rama of Mata Nui were refitted with Infected Kanohi and stationed as the flying guardians of the island's jungles and high altitude regions, intended to keep Matoran in their villages. Undergoing extensive behavioral changes during this time, the Nui-Rama became more confrontational as a result, earning the species a reputation as one of the island's apex predators.
Some time after the Toa Mata arrived on the island, Teridax commanded the Nui-Rama to mount an offensive on Le-Koro, an assault that led to the capture of Toa Lewa and the loss of his Golden Mask. Fitted with an Infected Kanohi, Lewa became an ally of the Nui-Rama as they launched further assaults against the Le-Matoran. The constant Nui-Rama attacks would prove so relentless that Kongu established the Gukko Force to defend the village from Rahi invasion during this time.
After 1000 years of opposing the Matoran at the behest of Makuta Teridax, this Nui-Rama colony was liberated from Makuta's control by the efforts of the Toa Mata and Matoran of Mata Nui.
Following the Battle of Bara Magna and subsequent Reformation of Spherus Magna, the Matoran Universe's entire Nui-Rama population was evacuated onto the surface of a new world. It is assumed that the species here returned to its natural habitat.
Abilities and Traits[]
Sharing a similar biology to many of Bitil's Rahi creations, there existed two notable sub-variations of Nui-Rama, distinguished either by orange or lime coloring. Nui-Rama possessed a hard exoskeleton to protect their main body parts and were recognizable from other insectoid Rahi by their pointed lower abdomens and the narrow petiole. The species was also equipped with a pair of clawed arms for restraining prey, a set of thin wings capable of stinging, and compound eyes to allow enhanced movement tracking.
Despite spawning in large hives, Nui-Rama were solitary in nature, using their stingers repeatedly for both defense and subduing prey. The Nui-Rama’s stingers beat about 100 times per second and create a recognizable buzzing sound. Relying on ambush and built for speed, many Nui-Rama were also opportunistic feeders, preferring to suck the fluids of their prey and adapting mandibles for liquid feeding. Although they did not typically attract pollen from plants, Nui-Rama still aided in the propagation of several tropical plant species and kept insect populations under control.
Nui-Rama hunted a wide variety of prey, their diet mainly composed of Protodermis and small insects, such as Niazesk, Protodites, and Acidfliers. Highly intelligent, Nui-Rama often returned to locations where they previously found prey to forage, also feeding on fallen fruit, nectar, and carrion.
Despite their lack of nutrients and large size, Nui-Rama were the preferred prey of the Ranama in volcanic climates, a species that was capable of catching Nui-Rama with its tongue and digesting them whole.
