The Nui-Jaga were a breed of scorpion-like Rahi.
History[]
The Nui-Jaga species were originally created by Makuta Vamprah using viruses and Liquid Protodermis to be one of the species to inhabit the Matoran Universe. Genetically engineered to secrete a powerful enzyme found originally in Skakdi, the Nui-Jaga were intended to chemically reconstitute withered vegetation, along with many other Rahi.
Due to their tolerance for multiple environmental conditions, Nui-Jaga were widely distributed across the Matoran Universe, adapting most prominently to desert ecosystems around the Great Spirit Robot. Over the course of several years, the species revealed themselves to be a predatory and ill-tempered breed of Rahi, dominating most desert food chains. Sharing an ecosystem with various other species, the Nui-Jaga came to develop a natural rivalry with larger land Rahi, such as the Kikanalo and Kane-Ra. Generally, the Nui-Jaga species was known to have lived in isolation from the Matoran population, with exceedingly few examples of the species being domesticated. As such, members of the species characteristically thrived in small hunting parties or in pairs.
In Metru Nui, the Nui-Jaga population was known to have taken up residence in the less developed regions of Po-Metru. As the gaps in the Metru Nui map closed up and processes of modernization saw the expansion of urban areas into Nui-Jaga grazing territory, the species began venturing into populated areas, often coming into conflict with Po-Matoran crafters while scavenging. Frequently, Vahki Zadakh would be dispatched to apprehend Nui-Jaga only for the Rahi to scurry away before capture.
A source of constant academic curiosity, Nui-Jaga specimens were featured prominently in the Archives. In addition, many Po-Matoran took to hunting the species and claiming their stingers as trophies. Some time after the Great Disruption, Turaga Dume took extensive measures to counteract the illegal trade of such Rahi parts.
In the years after the Great Cataclysm, the Nui-Jaga population of Po-Metru emerged from hiding, damaging a number of Matoran dwellings and triggering landslides in quarries across the district. With the arrival of the Visorak Horde upon the island, however, the overwhelming majority of Nui-Jaga specimens migrated to the island of Mata Nui through the Great Barrier, pursuing a less hostile habitat in the darker regions of the island, principally inhabiting the tunnels beneath Kini Nui in the center of the island.
Following the arrival of Makuta Teridax on the island, the Nui-Jaga of Mata Nui were refitted with Infected Kanohi and stationed as the guardians of the island's desert plains, intended to keep Matoran in their villages. Undergoing extensive behavioral changes during this time, the Nui-Jaga became more confrontational as a result, earning the species a reputation as one of the island's apex predators.
During this time, an Av-Matoran named Takua would disturb a Nui-Jaga, prompting the creature to stalk him across the jungle floors of Le-Wahi. Afraid to turn back and bring the Rahi back to Ta-Koro, Takua instead led the Nui-Jaga to the den of a Muaka, leaving the two predators to battle each other over the contested breach of territory.
After 1000 years of opposing the Matoran at the behest of Makuta Teridax, this Nui-Jaga colony was liberated from Makuta's control by the efforts of the Toa Mata and Matoran of Mata Nui.
When the Great Spirit Robot suffered critical damage, the surviving members of the Nui-Jaga populations emigrated to Spherus Magna. Many have chosen the Great Barren as their primary habitat, though the Po-Metru populations seem to have migrated to the Black Spike Mountains in pursuit of larger prey.
Abilities and Traits[]
Abundant in arid regions of the Matoran Universe, Nui-Jaga characteristically thrive amidst desert plains of the Matoran Universe, regulating the populations of species below them in their respective food chain. Regarded as one of the most reviled species of Rahi in the Matoran Universe, the Nui-Jaga triggered a deep-seated, primordial fear in many observers, most of which was centered around the stinger tail, the species' preferred method of defense. Able to hurl venom capable of temporarily blinding a target or stinging to the point of fatal paralysis, the Nui-Jaga were regarded as the apex predators of the Matoran Universe's desert plains. The species was known to feed on an abundance of smaller Rahi, their diet spanning across notable species such as Husi, Pokawi, Taku, Infernavika, and Mahi. Their preferred prey of choice, however, was historically the Bog Snake.
Carnivorous in nature, Nui-Jaga typically hunt down their prey in crevices and small burrows, which provide refuge from the intense heat of the desert. Incapable of camouflage, Nui-Jaga can enter a state of hibernation when food is scarce, using their claws to crush prey into submission. However, though specimens more often resort to chasing their prey into tight spaces and corners before striking.
On occasion, cannibalistic traits have been expressed by Nui-Jaga as a survival tool. When prey is few and far between, eating smaller specimens of their own pack can sustain a Nui-Jaga for up to six months. As a precaution, younger Nui-Jaga often hunt in pairs to avoid encountering their more experienced elders. On any given night, only a fraction of the Nui-Jaga population emerged to hunt, with the remainder hiding in their burrows, either waiting to strike or digesting their last meal.
