- "Mark me well, girl. This great enemy is called ‘I.’ And it is not enough that I teach you to merely stand against it. I must teach you to destroy it."
- ―Nephthys, Journey to the Center of the Mind
Nephthys, known almost exclusively as Mother Nephthys, is a Toa of Psionics residing in the Demons Alternate Universe.
Biography[]
Early History[]
Nephthys began life as a Ce-Matoran. At some point prior to the Cataclysm War, she recited her pledges at the Suva and transformed into a Toa of Psionics.
Nephthys participated in the Cataclysm War, where she fought against Gaius Quintus. She killed him by cutting off his head with a psionic strike. Later accounts would downplay her feat, merely claiming that she had cut off his arm.
Nephthys eventually settled down on Ormenskake, in the port town of Yan Cun, and became a mentor for newly-transformed Toa. Though highly sought out at first, her strange methods and distinctly un-Toa-like worldview caused many potential apprentices to abandon their training before it began, and her reputation to sour in some parts of the world. It was during this time that Chamak, himself an aspiring mentor, came to her seeking insight; the two struck up a vitriolic friendship, and he visited her every month for three years.

Abilities and Traits[]
As a Toa of Psionics, Nephthys can create and control psionic energy, and access a variety of abilities such as illusion, telekinesis, and telepathy. Her abilities are so developed that she can harness psionic energy as a superior substitute for traditional weapons, as shown when she killed Gaius Quintus; or fabricate whole worlds and scenarios in other beings' minds, as shown when she gave Halima her preliminary assessment. This proficiency has earned her a reputation as the greatest still-living practitioner of the Psionic Art.
Nephthys is known as a harsh teacher and a cynical, straightforward Toa. She does not hesitate to speak her mind or lay out expectations up front, and prefers that others do the same; however, she can be quick to anger at careless talk or naivete. Though she is otherwise dismissive of her reputation, she tends to bicker with her students and hide her affection for them for the sake of keeping up appearances.
Nephthys' worldview is unusual in that she rejects the precepts of the Toa Code. Instead, she believes that a Toa must embrace violence in order to effectively uphold the Three Virtues and serve as a protector. She believes that the self is the greatest threat to a Toa's duty, and so must have the greatest acts of violence committed against it, in a process she calls "destruction of the great enemy called 'I.'"
Mask and Tools[]
Nephthys wears a navy-blue Great Calix, which allows her to perform at the absolute peak of her natural physical abilities. She relies entirely on her elemental proficiency as her weapon. She is often seen with an ornate smoking pipe.
Quotes[]
- "Here is my second lesson, girl. Do not ask to learn of my power, for it is mine alone, just as your power is yours alone. That is what you must seek; to do otherwise is the height of selfishness. Ask me again."
- ―Nephthys, Journey to the Center of the Mind
Trivia[]
- Like all Psionics-based characters under Lan's pen, Nephthys contains references to ancient Arabic and Egyptian culture and history:
- She is named after Nephthys, the Egyptian goddess associated with the night, childbirth, mourning, protection, and temple service.
- The broad gold collar she wears is an usekh, a traditional piece of ancient Egyptian jewelry.
- Nephthys' personality and worldview are heavily inspired by the characters Auntie Maya and Meti ten Ryo from the webcomic Kill Six Billion Demons.
