Mathus is a mysterious Turaga of Earth and former member of the Toa Valmai.
History[]
Early life[]
Mathus began life as an Onu-Matoran, created by the Great Beings. Upon completion of the Matoran Universe's construction, Mathus was placed within the Great Spirit Robot on the Northern Continent, where he lived among other Matoran.
Life as a Toa[]
Some 79,100 years ago, Mathus was transformed into a Toa of Earth via a Toa Stone and was later recruited into the Toa Valmai, led by Jovan. At some point during the Matoran Civil War, Mathus fell into contact with former members of the Hand of Artakha, who sought to rebuild their order in competition with the Order of Mata Nui. Mathus agreed to help them establish operations in the Southern Islands, away from the Order's notice. The Toa of Earth kept his activities with the Hand secret from Jovan and the rest of the Toa Valmai.
With Mata Nui's health imperiled by the Matoran Civil War, the Toa Valmai set out for the Southern Continent to locate the Mask of Life, using it to restore the Great Spirit to health. Their destiny fulfilled, the Toa Valmai went their separate ways; Mathus returned to his home village and came to serve as his people's Turaga after transferring his power into Toa Stones, which he then bequeathed to various Matoran, including Trisuma.
Life as a Turaga[]
Rather than take up leadership of a Matoran village like most Turaga, Mathus instead returned to the Hand of Artakha and served as their temporary leader, naming himself their "King," in place of the imprisoned Mallake.
For the next several thousand years, the Hand of Artakha laid low until the Great Cataclysm occurred, at which point the Hand made their move against the Order of Mata Nui. Mathus quickly realized that leading the Hand was not at all like leading a team of Toa like he had initially thought and the Hand were swiftly defeated and imprisoned within the Order's fortress on Daxia.
When Makuta Teridax usurped control of the Matoran Universe, he leveled Daxia and destroyed the fortress, presumably killing Mathus in the process.
Empire of Makuta Universe[]
After the Great Cataclysm, the Hand of Artakha established an invisible fortress on Voya Nui from which they calculated their next moves. When Axonn and a group of Matoran stumbled across the Hand's operations, they were brought before Turaga Mathus who ordered their imprisonment.
Shortly afterwards, Mallake returned from the Pit and quickly retook command of the Hand from Mathus, though not without expressing distaste at having been replaced by a Turaga. Following a confrontation with the Order of Mata Nui, Mallake and his followers fled from Voya Nui, leaving Turaga Mathus behind. The Turaga of Earth was subsequently captured by the Order and imprisoned at their fortress on Daxia.
Abilities and Traits[]
As a Toa, Mathus had the ability to control the element of Earth.
Masks and Tools[]
As a Matoran, Mathus wore a powerless Kanohi Hau, which became a Great Mask of Shielding upon his transformation into a Toa. The mask allowed him to create a shield around his body and protect himself from physical attacks.
