The Mata Nui Cow was a breed of docile cow-Rahi.
History[]
The Mata Nui Cows were originally created by Makuta Tridax using viruses and Liquid Protodermis, originally intended to be one of the species to populate the central Matoran Universe. Genetically engineered to secrete a powerful enzyme found originally in Skakdi, the Mata Nui Cows were intended to chemically reconstitute withered vegetation, along with many other Rahi.
Distributed across the Matoran Universe, the Mata Nui Cows revealed themselves to be a peaceful and generally well-natured breed of Rahi, successfully adapting to most ecosystems and integrating themselves into Matoran life with relative ease, rejuvenating arid regions. Across the Matoran Universe, Mata Nui Cows were often cultivated to rapidly regrow vegetation with their enzymes, with Matoran communities finding the species easier to care for than many larger Rahi species. Generally, the Mata Nui Cow species was known to have lived in harmony with the Matoran population, with many communities choosing to tend to individual Makau, often training them to pull carts and haul cargo, though their Mahi cousins were generally considered easier to domesticate.
In Metru Nui, there was known to exist a significant Mata Nui Cow population in Ga-Metru. In an effort to preserve the species, a number of specimens were relocated to the Onu-Metru Archives. These Mata Nui Cows would later migrate to the island of Mata Nui.
On Mata Nui, a small herd of Mata Nui Cows was known to be kept in all six villages, feeding off of the grassy plains and abundance of wildgrass growing in the central belt of the island.
Following the Battle of Bara Magna and subsequent Reformation of Spherus Magna, the majority of the Matoran Universe's Mata Nui Cow population was evacuated onto the surface of a new world, eventually coming to flourish in the grasslands of Spherus Magna.
Abilities and Traits[]
As quadrupedal Rahi, Mata Nui Cows possess cloven hooves with two toes that spread wide to improve balance. Rough pads on the bottom of each toe provide the grip of a natural climbing shoe. Individual specimens are powerful but nimble, able to charge at great speeds in herds.
Wild Mata Nui Cows conventionally roam desert regions of the Matoran Universe, migrating in search of water in small herds, typically containing less than a dozen members. Conventionally, Mata Nui Cows eat plants, roots, and seeds but will also eat Protodites or other lizard-like creatures available in their sometimes harsh habitat.
Mata Nui Cows are considered prey by a vast majority of the Rahi kingdom. Thus, to assist predator detection, their eyes are located on the sides of their head rather than the front, giving the Mata Nui Cow a wide field of view. Moreover, their digestive system is highly specialized to allow the use of poorly digestible plants as food.
Mata Nui Cows are also able to memorize the locations of several food sources and retain this memory for at least 8 hours, but their longer-term memory is less stable.

- The Mata Nui Cow was initially named the "Mukau" in early BIONICLE Media, its name being a pun on "moo cow". This name was later retconned to correlate with the more immersive tone of the franchise.
