The Great Spirit Mata Nui, also sometimes referred to as Undeserving King of All Things, Unworthy Wearer of the Mask of Life or simply the Mad Titan, is an almighty entity created by the Great Beings in the Shadow Alternate Universe to oversee Matora Magna.
Biography[]
Great Spirit of Matora Magna[]
Mata Nui was created by the Great Beings as an all-powerful non-physical entity to rule and oversee Matora Magna, a planetoid equivalent to the Matoran Universe in the Prime Reality. His mission was to oversee the construction of the artificial planet by the Matoran, and make it into a new heaven, helping the development of plantlife and wildlife, creating new species (most notably the Makuta to help him in his creative tasks) and overall ensuring that the planet functioned properly. When the time of the shattering of Spherus Magna would come, Mata Nui was to bring every inhabitant of Spherus to Matora using his powers, and would then have been deactivated since the Great Beings were back to rule their creation. The Great Spirit followed his duty, as programmed, just like every single inhabitant of Matora Magna, for a long time up until the completion of the planetoid according to the Great Beings' plans.
However, Mata Nui's mission did not turn out as planned after one of the Great Beings, named Velika, tempered with the inhabitants of Matora's programming and made them all conscious, the Great Spirit included.
Descent into madness[]
At first, nothing was different. Despite their newly-gained consciousness, the Matoran and other species continued their mission of taking care and maintaining Matora Magna. However, because of the completion of the planetoid and the peaceful lives of its inhabitants, Mata Nui had basically become useless.
Out of boredom perhaps, or maybe because of the way Velika had tempered with the Great Spirit's mind, Mata Nui started to do things that he was not programmed for and began to try to experiment and see the extent of his ultimate powers. He started by modifying the weather and time, for instance causing sudden rains in deserts or night falling midday. It was harmless and just confused the Matoran a little, so Mata Nui kept doing this for a while. But he soon wanted to do more, so he started experimenting on plants and Rahi too, creating monstrous beings by fusing some to some others. It was still not enough for him, for he had nothing else to do. That's the moment where things started to go downfall.
Slowly becoming mad with power, Mata Nui began playing with the lives of sentient species. Matoran and others would be killed in the most gruesome ways, and their deaths would remain a mystery for Mata Nui was not a physical entity. For the inhabitants of Matora, it only seemed like the victims' time had come and they were raptured by an almighty power. Around this time, the Order of Mata Nui was founded by Toa Helryx as a sect devoted to the fearful and fanatic worship of the mysterious deity in the skies. This belief rapidly spread across the entire planetoid, since its inhabitants' original programming guaranteed that they follow the will of the Great Spirit.
Embodiment[]
Mata Nui was satisfied with his newfound status as the most powerful entity in the universe - or so he thought - but still craved for more glory and recognition. He decided to use his powers to create himself a physical body, forged out of the Mask of Life, and descend upon Matora Magna so that his followers could worship him directly. He became a living god to the inhabitants of the planetoid, surrounding himself by a tyrannic army of Toa and others bent on doing his bidding. The Great Spirit feasted in praise and acclaim and violently punished anyone that dared to oppose him, making public demonstrations out of his executions.
However, his embodiment was also met with resentment from a substantial part of the population. Beings whose programming did not specifically force them to serve the will of Mata Nui started to form a secret, although minor, opposition force, seeing that the Great Spirit was an actual being like all of them, albeit theoretically invincible. The most prominent opposants were the Brotherhood of Makuta and the Dark Hunters.
The Great Spirit Robot[]
At some point, on a whim, Mata Nui ordered the Matoran to build him a gigantic robot from which the Great Spirit could rule and oversee the entire planet. His Ultimate Element could have allowed him to summon such a creation in the blink of an eye, but he reveled in having others diligently serve him. The Great Spirit Robot served as a symbol of power, towering above the world at unfathomable heights, casting its shadow across entire islands and continents, ensuring that it could be seen from a great distance as to remind Matora's inhabitants that the Mad Titan was always watching. After the completion of the Robot, Mata Nui went on to occupy its head, ruling over the world from up above.
On Spherus, the Great Beings had no idea what was going on on Matora, too occupied with problems of their own with the Core War and the ever increasing amount of leaking Protodermis. At a point where they sensed the Shattering was about to occur, they sent a signal towards the planetoid, which according to Mata Nui's programming should have led them to be transported to Matora Magna and then take over as rulers, deactivating the Great Spirit in the process as his service would no longer have been needed. However, Mata Nui's gained consciousness thanks to Velika's tempering had made him aware of this destiny that he could not accept. To ensure his own survival and status as the only ruler of Matora, he answered the Great Beings' call with a beam of pure energy, fired from the Robot, that greatly empowered the Eneregized Protodermis and utterly annihilated Spherus Magna, killing everyone on it in the process. This event was later referenced by the Matoran as "The Shattering".
The Great Cataclysm[]
But unbeknownst to Mata Nui, taking advantage of the distraction the genocide of Spherus Magna caused to the Great Spirit, one of his creations, a Makuta named Teridax, had made his way into the Great Spirit Robot. Using his Staff of Shadows to stab Mata Nui right in the heart, Teridax started to drain the Great Spirit's Ultimate Element out of him so that he could no longer endanger anyone. After the shock of surprise however, Mata Nui regained consciousness and threw Teridax away from him. The battle that ensued is said to have been the most fierce that ever took place in the Shadow Alternate Universe. Teridax made use of all his Makuta powers, and Mata Nui of all he could harness from his residual Ultimate Element. The latter lost a leg in the fight and his left arm was dislocated from his shoulder.
On the surface of Matora Magna, things were looking pretty catastrophic. The Great Spirit Robot, now rendered uncontrolable because of Teridax draining the powers of Mata Nui, walked erratically for the many days the fight lasted. It made its way from Metru Nui at the north pole to Daxia on the equator, destroying
most of the City of Legends by doing so, separating Voya Nui from the Southern Continent and making Mahri Nui sink into the new island's bay. Once the robot arrived over the island of Daxia, a huge explosion in its left shoulder blew off its left arm, which then sunk into the ocean, and the robot suddenly stopped its course. It is believed that was the moment Teridax managed to kill Mata Nui once and for all.
Because the Great Spirit Robot has since been on full lockdown, no one ever managed to enter it. Neither Mata Nui nor Teridax were ever seen leaving it, leading to the common belief that both of them passed away at the end of their illfated battle.
Abilities and Traits[]
Being imbued with the Ultimate Element, Mata Nui could virtually harness any single power he wanted and was theoretically invincible. As the Great Spirit of Matora Magna, he specifically had complete control over the inner workings of the planetoid and mainly used his powers to create life and other beings to help him in his task of making Matora a safe haven where the Great Beings could live, when the time of Spherus had come. Other notable uses of his powers occurred when he granted himself a physical body out of the Ignika and when he fired a devastating beam of energy that precipitated Spherus Magna's destruction.
After the Great Being Velika tempered with the consciousness of every single inhabitant of Matora, Mata Nui developed a God complex and displayed a gradually worsening megalomaniac, egotistical, power-hungry behavior. He took particular pleasure in being worshipped and adored. On countless occasions, he acted on murderous impulses and tortured beings for no reason other than his own pleasure. He was known to be capable of a sickly sadistic character, on one instance deciding to murder every single Maxilos Robot in the universe, leaving only one alive and granting him consciousness so that he could suffer from the loss of his kind for his entire existence.
The Great Spirit's belief that no one was above him also proved to be his greatest weakness, since he couldn't even fathom the idea that someone would be foolish enough to dare to attack him. This led to his demise at the hands of Teridax, who took down Mata Nui by taking advantage of his being focused on the genocide of Spherus Magna.

Trivia[]
- This version of Mata Nui (and most of what became the Shadow Alternate Universe) was based off the idea of what would have happened had the Great Spirit, responsible for the entirety of the Matoran Universe, gone terribly wrong.
- Mata Nui's MOC form is based off the HERO Factory set 7145 Von Nebula. The hunched posture, especially, makes him look way more menacing.
- Ironically enough, when building the "destroyed" form of Mata Nui after his fight against Teridax, DarknessApogee accidentally broke one of the parts, as shown in the adjacent picture (right-hand top corner).
