The Mask of Incomprehension is a Kanohi that allowed the user to disrupt exchanges of lingual data, both oral and written.

History[]

The Mask of Incomprehension traces its origins back to some of the earliest mask-making techniques adopted on Spherus Magna, where an unclear number of Masks were created for the Matoran populace. At this point in the history of the Matoran Universe, the Mask had no elemental affiliation and was generally ignored by the public, seeing no practical use for it.

However, islands and factions at war have found uses for it. On the battlefields, soldiers would disrupt communications between enemy units, stagnating attempts at coordination. Out of combat, commanders use it to encrypt information in tablets, requiring a Rau to decode. The Mask became more infamous during the peak of the Toa/Dark Hunter War on Metru Nui, proving to be a boon for the latter group. Because of its applications in those times, Toa would go on to consider the Mask's power immoral.

Powers[]

Great[]

The Mask of Incomprehension causes a recipient of any material, written or oral, to view the text in question as obfuscated in the former case and jumbled into nonsensical noises for the latter case.

For written material, it is notable that once the bearer of this Mask has altered a message, it remains unreadable by all others until someone is able to undo the obfuscation. Otherwise, this "encryption" of sorts will remain forever. The power imbued by the Mask into the message alters how a viewer's brain perceives the message, in a fashion akin to a reading disability; The brain's ability to process language is hampered by the power of this Mask that lingers in the message. To alter written material for others, the bearer must directly look and be able to read the written message, but does not necessarily need to hold it. For this reason, telescopic lenses are often attached to the Mask of Incomprehension.

For voices and other message transmitted through sound, again, the Mask of Incomprehension acts to alter the auditory sections of the brain causing it to interpret very particular sound waves, that is, voices, incorrectly. In this case, the Mask acts as a sort of jammer. The Mask, in this scenario, must be actively used and all other entities in a radius are affected by the Kanohi's power.

Two major limitations of this mask are that it has no effect on sign language and can be countered with a Kanohi Rau or telepathy.

Noble[]

The Noble Mask of Incomprehension functions in the exact same way as the Great version, but the length of obfuscated written material fades away after several days and the radius of jumbling vocal communication is reduced.
