The Mahi were a breed of goat-like Rahi.
History[]
The Mahi were originally created by Makuta Tridax using viruses and Liquid Protodermis to be one of the species to inhabit the Matoran Universe. Genetically engineered to secrete a powerful enzyme found originally in Skakdi, the Mahi were intended to chemically reconstitute withered vegetation, along with many other Rahi.
Distributed across the Matoran Universe, the Mahi revealed themselves to be a docile and well-natured breed of Rahi, successfully adapting to the desert ecosystem and integrating themselves into Matoran life with relative ease, rejuvenating arid regions. Across the Matoran Universe, Mahi were often cultivated to rapidly regrow vegetation with their enzymes, with Matoran communities finding the species easier to care for than many larger Rahi species. Across the Matoran Universe, Mahi were also used to pull carts and haul cargo.
In Metru Nui, there was known to exist a significant Mahi population in the arid habitat of Po-Metru. In an effort to preserve the species, a number of specimens were relocated to the Onu-Metru Archives. These Mahi would later migrate to the island of Mata Nui.
On Mata Nui, a small herd of Mahi was known to be kept by Golyo, in the village of Po-Koro. Famously, this flock of Mahi was known to have been magnetized to Toa Nuva Pohatu during a confrontation with the Gahlok Kal.
Generally, the Mahi species was known to have lived in harmony with the Matoran population, with many communities choosing to tend to individual Mahi.
Abilities and Traits[]
As quadrupedal Rahi, Mahi possess cloven hooves with two toes that spread wide to improve balance. Rough pads on the bottom of each toe provide the grip of a natural climbing shoe. Individual specimens are powerful but nimble and can jump nearly 10 feet in a single bound.
Wild Mahi conventionally roam desert regions of the Matoran Universe, migrating in search of water in small herds, typically containing less than a dozen members.
Mahi generally eat plants, roots, and seeds but will also eat Protodites or other lizard-like creatures available in their sometimes harsh habitat.
Mahi are considered prey by a vast majority of the Rahi kingdom. Thus, to assist predator detection, their eyes are located on the sides of their head rather than the front, giving the Mahi a wide field of view. Moreover, their digestive system is highly specialized to allow the use of poorly digestible plants as food.
