History[]
Early Life[]
Like many Ko-Matoran, he was created at aid in the construction of a giant mechanoid on the planet of Spherus Magna. Once it was completed, he entered the construct and settled on one of its many domes. The island held a number of races on it, with Matoran making about a ninth of the total population. It is due to their small numbers that very little Toa approach the island. In their absence, a local militia was formed to defend it.
The Matoran and other smaller races existed primarily as servants on the island, tending to public services and aiding in construction efforts. Mafa worked in one of the mines of the island, operating one of their boring machines. He looked up to the Dragonguard -the elite warriors of the dome's monarch. Longing for a life beyond the mines, he began practicing self-defense in the hopes of gaining their attention. Someone did catch on and secretly gave him a Toa Stone.
Send on a quest to locate the island's Suva, he journeyed far and wide for it. He eventually found it and inserted the Stone into it, channeling the energy within into his own being. Thus he became a Toa of Ice. As soon as he left the temple, he journeyed to a neighboring land in the hopes of finding someone to mentor him. After a week of searching, he found a Toa of Lightning by the name of Nolgyne.
Though initial lessons worked out well for the first few months, tensions between student and master began to rise. Mafa became overconfident in his Elemental prowess and began skipping out on training sessions. He'd often embark on some journey or another across the land, looking for anything he deemed a challenge. This eventually led to a bar fight with an unknown individual. The conflict between both parties led to the destruction of the establishment and onto the streets outside. Many of the villagers were caught in the fighting and suffered major injuries. By the time Nolgyne arrived to investigate, much of the settlement lay in ruin.
Nolgyne used her Elemental powers to stun both combatants, knocking out Mafa's opponent and demanding an explanation for everything that transpired here. After listening to the grievances and testimonies from the natives, Nolgyne handcuffed her pupuil with chains of Dark Elemental Energy and ordered him to set sail at once. When the student inquried as to where, she coldly replied "somewhere far".
She reminded of the Toa Code, briefly noting as to how Toa were forbidden from killing sapient beings. She did, however, not so subtly noted that other races hold such beliefs and were more than happy to execute offenders. As she said this, one of the villagers rammed his pitchfork into Mafa's opponent, while he was in chains no less. Mafa was horrified by this sudden act of violence and the undignified death his brief enemy suffered. Filled with terror and shame, Mafa sailed back to his home island.
Word of his battle reached his homeland and the Dragongaurd. While many were wiry of him, the guild were impressed with his icy prowess. He was made a squire in the guild and placed under the wing of an unknown knight. This individual was a renowned dragon-slayer and saw potential within him. He was trained in hand-to-hand combat, jousting, Elemental manipulation and much more for the next ten thousand years. Mafa eventually became a knight himself and was placed under their rite of passage.
His objective was simple; kill a native dragon-like Rahi. When he journeyed into the Rahi's canyon, he couldn't help but notice how scarce the creatures actually were. He found one resting in a lair and entered it. He allowed the beast to strike first and the battle began. Though he did emerge as the victor, he didn't relish the kill like the others. He later noticed a pack of smaller dragonlings further down in the lair and concluded that that they were its offspring. Guilt came to him as he grasped the weight of his actions, and for a time refused to return to the Dragongaurd. Instead he devoted his time to the little ones, raising and training them as mounts.
When he finally returned to civilization, be brought his steeds with them. He confronted the guild master and questioned their hunts, recounting the dwindling population and the shame he felt after slaying his dragon. A divide developed within the ranks and Mafa's story spread to the rest of the island. It didn't take long before the citizens realized that the native dragons were on the verge of extinction and demanded that the Dragongaurd cease their hunts. The guildmaster resigned after that and another knight assumed his position. He turned the guilds attention from hunting dragons to preserving them. As their numbers grew, they also took to raising their young and using them as steeds in battle. Mafa would serve as their tamer for a time before retiring from the organization
