The MARVELOUS-Verse is an extensive reimagining of the BIONICLE universe first introduced in the line's first generation.  Numerous things are altered, added, or removed due to either personal preferences or the desire to make the universe somewhat more coherent.

History[]

In-Universe[]

Mythology of the MARVELOUS-Verse[]

In the Time Before Time, the beast called Gah-Dun-Cah emerged from the darkness below the waters and raged against the heavens. The being called Hapori Tohu descended from the outer heavens and tried to satisfy her with food and mate, but his gifts were rejected and his arm was bitten off. Reluctantly taking up arms, he fought Gah-Dun-Cah for many millennia, until he struck a blow to her head powerful enough to place a crack in the heavens and displace her soul to the darkness below.

Hapori Tohu mourned Gah-Dun-Cah's death, after which he sought to make right his mistake and create life for the now-barren world. He imbued pieces of her body and his rejected feast with his powers of Life to create a ring of twelve islands covered in differing and beautiful landscapes. Unbeknownst to him, however, the Life he gave was tainted by the darkness still present in Gah-Dun-Cah's lingering blood.

Before Hapori Tohu could populate the islands that he had created, he discovered that his free use of his Life powers had worn away at his soul, and that he was not far from death. With the last of his power, he created three sons called Artakha, Karzahni, and Mata Nui. He blessed them with three virtues of the outer heavens and instructed them to carry on his desire to continue creating new life after they had laid him to rest, after which he died. Complying with their father's wish, the three sons burned Hapori Tohu's body on a pyre and scattered his ashes over the islands. Where the ashes landed, Hearts, Ore, and Elemental Stone sprang up.

The three sons used the Hearts, Ore, and Elemental Stone to create many different kinds of beings with many different strengths, each one suited best to live in the land it had come from. In his curiosity, Mata Nui created a Matoran from a different combination of materials, and his discovery prompted him and Artakha to continue experimenting in creating beings from different materials. But Karzahni refused to adapt his creative strategies.

Realizing that they would die like their father, the three sons created children of their own to help them oversee their lands and instruct their populations. The earth was peaceful for many years.

Out-of-Universe[]

The MARVELOUS-Verse had its beginnings in 2013, when Lan created his first serious original character, Gairu.  Lan immediately began thinking of how exactly this new original character would fit into the pre-existing BIONICLE universe, and, when confronted by the idea that Gairu would not fit into that universe, he decided to create a new one.

Over time, the MARVELOUS-Verse evolved from a simple tweak of the original universe to a full-blown overhaul, with a reworked mythology, culture, and means of repopulating.  Lan's intent went from simply shoehorning his characters and stories into an already complex universe, to creating a universe where every aspect was significant, and even the most underused element had some role to play in the overarching mythos.  Thus, the MARVELOUS-Verse as it is today was forged.

Significant Deviations[]

As a reworked universe, the MARVELOUS-Verse features many fundamental differences from the original BIONICLE universe.  Some of the major changes include:

  • The mythology is vastly different, with many minor established characters taking on important roles.
    • Characters established in pre-existing BIONICLE canon also exist within the MARVELOUS-Verse, but depending on their prior prominence, they are given varying levels of exposure- ranging from important initial roles for the more obscure to cameo appearances of the household names, so as to place more focus on original characters and storylines.
  • The number of locations and species are significantly reduced.
  • All MARVELOUS-Verse species are capable of wearing and using Kanohi.
  • There are only ten elemental powers:
  • The transformation from Matoran to Toa is very, very rare.
  • Turaga is now a title for Matoran prophets, rather than a transformation of Matoran.
  • The Brotherhood of Makuta is now a cult, rather than a race of beings.

Locations and Native Species[]

The number of locations within the geography of the MARVELOUS-Verse has been pared down dramatically to a mere twelve islands, again in the interest of maintaining significance for each element of the universe. The number of species populating these islands has also been pared down dramatically, in an attempt to eliminate problems of species where only a single member of that species is known.

  • Artidax, home of the Seck
  • Daxia, home of the Parakuka
  • Destral, home of the Vemosai
  • Maero, home of the Tongu
  • Metru Nui, home of the Matoran
  • Nynrah, home of the Akula
  • Odina, home of the Namasteans
  • Osar, originally kept barren but later home of the Osarians
  • Stelt, home of the Jhian and Murau breeds of Steltians
  • Visorak, home of the Barcudo
  • Xia, home of the Vortixx
  • Zakaz, home of the Skakdi

Trivia[]

  • At its original inception as a true alternate universe, the MARVELOUS-Verse had little direction, being little more than a different universe with too many names and pop culture references. Lan's later forays into writing and experiences with wider varieties of media would kickstart a major restructuring of the MARVELOUS-Verse starting in late 2020, with a focused direction, a consistent scale, and a more refined writing style.
  • The MARVELOUS-Verse is influenced by the Bible, the Lord of the Rings, Kill Six Billion Demons, Journey to the West, Norse, Hindu, and Chinese mythology, IDW's Transformers comics, and Attack on Titan.
