The Kanohi Kaukau was the Mask of Water Breathing, a Kanohi that allowed the user to breathe underwater for an extended period of time beyond their natural capability.
History[]
The Kanohi Kaukau traces its origins back back to some of the earliest mask-making techniques adopted on Spherus Magna, where an unclear number of Kaukau masks were created for the Matoran populace. At this point in the history of the Matoran Universe, the Kaukau became heavily associated with Ga-Matoran, who held the mask up as a symbol of their elemental discipline.

Over the 100,000 year span of the Matoran Universe's functionality, the Kaukau became a particularly wide-spread Kanohi. Favored in particular by Toa of Water, the Kaukau was also know to be sought after by Toa of Earth to travel through flooded tunnels. Many Toa inhabiting coastal regions have been known to carry Kaukaus as secondary Kanohi for such occasions.
In Metru Nui a Kaukau could crafted with relative ease using Regeneration, Shrink, and Poison Removal Kanoka disks. Given the ease that Kaukau could be created, however, the Kanohi became somewhat common in Matoran society, often being regarded as something of an impractical Kanohi and sold for cheaper prices.
When the Toa Mata arrived on Mata Nui, each Toa was tasked with earning a Kanohi Kaukau in order to gain a Golden Kanohi.
