The Kanohi Iden was the Mask of Spirit. It permitted its bearer to temporarily release their spirit from their body. When released, the user's spirit was able to fly at great speeds, travel through barriers, and inhabit the bodies of other uninhabited lifeforms. In this form, the bearer was practically invulnerable and visible only to Rode or Elda-wearers.

In spirit form, a bearer could not influence or interact with the physical world, losing access to any Elemental Powers they possessed as a consequence. Additionally, an Iden-user's body typically lapsed into a comatose state while their spirit was unleashed, leaving it vulnerable to attack. Furthermore, the mask could only be used in short bursts, as the spirit would quickly begin to deteriorate if separated from the body for too long. Xian scientific case studies have proven that if an Iden-bearer's body were to be placed in stasis, their spirit would eventually fade away.

History[]

The Kanohi Iden traces its origins back to some of the earliest mask-making techniques adopted on Spherus Magna, where an unclear number of Iden masks were created for the Matoran populace. At this point in the history of the Matoran Universe, the Iden became heavily associated with Le-Matoran, who held the mask up as a symbol of their elemental discipline and thrill-seeking nature.

Over the 100,000 year span of the Matoran Universe's functionality, the Iden became a moderately wide-spread Kanohi. In Metru Nui it could be crafted with relative ease using Teleport, Shrink, and Freeze Kanoka disks, usually originating from Le-Metru or Ta-Metru. Requiring specific Kanoka disks to manufacture, the Iden was a typically uncommon mask in Metru Nui, with only a handful of Mask Makers capable of crafting it successfully.

7,000 years ago, a Toa of Psionics was killed in the Toa Fortress whilst using her Kanohi Iden. Cut off from her body and weakening, she was known to have lingered within the abandoned fortress and reconstituted herself using water vapor two days after her death, assaulting an Order of Mata Nui recovery team sent to inspect the site in the process. Confronted by Mersery and Toa Jarodin, however, her neural cortex was swiftly destabilized and her spirit form dissipated.

Awarded to him by Karzahni, Toa Matoro would later liberate Voya Nui with the Toa Inika whilst bearing an organic Kanohi Iden.
