The Hapaka were a breed of small, hound-like Rahi.
History[]
The Hapaka species were originally created by Makuta Antroz using viruses and Liquid Protodermis to be one of the species to inhabit the Matoran Universe. Genetically engineered to secrete a powerful enzyme found originally in Skakdi, the Hapaka were intended to chemically reconstitute withered vegetation, along with many other Rahi.
Distributed across the Matoran Universe, the Hapaka revealed themselves to be a docile and well-natured breed of Rahi, successfully adapting to coastal ecosystems and integrating themselves into Matoran life with relative ease, providing eggs and rejuvenating arid regions. Across the Matoran Universe, Hapaka were often cultivated to rapidly regrow vegetation with their enzymes, with Matoran communities finding the species easier to care for than many larger Rahi species.
In Metru Nui, there was known to exist a significant Hapaka population in the sparser habitated of the Ga-Metru coastline, often being trained to drive off Kavinika. In an effort to preserve the species, a number of specimens were relocated to the Onu-Metru Archives.
Following the Great Cataclysm, the Hapaka population continued to reconstitute the Ga-Metru coastline in the absence of Ga-Matoran. With the arrival of the Visorak Horde upon the island, however, the overwhelming majority of Hapaka specimens migrated to the island of Mata Nui, pursuing less hostile habitats in the various regions across the island.
Following the Battle of Bara Magna and subsequent Reformation of Spherus Magna, the majority of the Matoran Universe's Hapaka population was evacuated onto the surface of a new world, though several colonies remained trapped. Seeking to rescue Rahi, the Toa Hagah were known to have been instrumental in transporting many different species from the decaying Matoran Universe, allowing the Hapaka to flourish in the coastal biomes of Spherus Magna.
Abilities and Traits[]
Generally, the Hapaka species was known to have lived in harmony with the Matoran population, with many communities choosing to tend to small clusters of Hapaka. Despite this, however, the species remains does not lend itself to widespread domestication.
Abundant in the coastal northern regions of the Matoran Universe but poorly suited to the harsher climates of the Southern Island Chain, the Hapaka characteristically thrive in close proximity to water sources, attracted to tropical climates devoid of larger predators.
Conventionally, Hapaka were used to herd livestock, aid hunters, guard homes, and ward off larger Rahi. Fulfilling a similar role as Dermis Turtles, Hapaka are often kept as household companions, earning their keep but largely domesticated.
As one of the few breeds of mammalian Rahi to inhabit the Matoran Universe, the Hapaka are largely directed by their olfactory cortex, possessing a keen sense of smell up to ten times as effective as that of a Matoran. Conversely, their visual world consists of yellows, blues and grays, but they have difficulty differentiating red and green.
Trivia[]
- The Hapaka could be constructed by combining the Gahlok Va and Kohrak Va sets.
