Hahli was Ga-Matoran from Metru Nui, would later become the Toa Inika of Water, before being transformed into a Toa Mahri.

History[]

Early Life[]

As a Ga-Matoran, Hahli began her life on Spherus Magna, where she aided in the construction the Matoran Universe with no worldly desires or true consciousness. After a considerable period of autonomous labor, she was placed in Ga-Metru with a small community of Matoran, endeavoring to carry out her purpose by ensuring the continued functionality of the Great Spirit Robot.

Shortly after the successful launch of the Matoran Universe, however, Hahli gained true sentience due to Velika's tampering with the Matoran species. Although she continued her original task, Hahli was imbued with emotions and became self-aware.

With the Ga-Metru education industry developing into a city-wide infrastructure, Hahli enrolled in a number of academic ventures, hoping to one day work in a laboratory treating Liquid Protodermis. After a number of setbacks, however, she would eventually find herself under the tutelage of Nokama.

Shortly before the Great Cataclysm, however, Hahli, along with all the other Matoran of Metru Nui, was instructed to convene on the Coliseum by Makuta Teridax, who had taken the guise of Turaga Dume. Once she arrived, Hahli was confronted by a squadron of Vahki and placed inside a Matoran Sphere. During her time inside the sphere, her body reduced in size, and all her previous memories were erased.

Hahli's size and physical strength were also reduced as a consequence of her Matoran Sphere.

Mata Nui[]

After being awakened by the Toa Metru on Naho Bay, Hahli aided in the construction of Ga-Koro using Airship parts under Turaga Nokama's direction. With her memory erased and her body notably shrunken due to prolonged stasis, Hahli began a new profession, training to become a Flax Maker under the instruction of her neighbor, Amaya.

Enjoying a year of peace, the progress of the Matoran was notably hindered by the arrival of Makuta Teridax on the island, however, who used Infected Kanohi to corrupt the island's Rahi population. Relentlessly hounded by Rahi attacks and tidal waves, Hahli came to situate herself in Ga-Koro, rarely traveling beyond the region for fear of the Takea and Tarakava.

Over the course of the next 1000 years, Hahli and her fellow Ga-Matoran would thus construct the village of Ga-Koro, reinforcing defenses around their settlement and devising plans for the Temple of Purity before it was lost to the sea. During this time, Hahli gained prominence in Ga-Koro, earning her the attention of Turaga Nokama, who initially pushed her to travel the island.

Hahli was among a number of Ga-Matoran villagers who witnessed the arrival of Toa Gali in Ga-Koro. With the Toa Mata arriving on the island, the Rahi attacks increased in their frequency, prompting the Ga-Matoran to defend their village from threats such as Tarakava, Nui Rama, Ruki and Takea with limited success. When the Toa succeeded in their quest to collect their Golden Kanohi and descended into the Mangaia tunnels, Hahli was part of the Ga-Matoran strike team that arrived in Kini Nui to defend the entrance from the Infected Rahi. In one final battle, the Matoran emerged victorious, finally freeing the Rahi from Makuta's mental influence and restoring balance to Mata Nui in the process.

Mask of Light[]

Following the Bohrok Invasion and the defeat of the Bohrok Kal, Hahli was rebuilt into a form resembling the one she had held before being confined in a Matoran Sphere. She then returned to Ga-Koro, where she was publicly announced as Ga-Koro's primary Kolhii Champion by Turaga Nokama. Paired with Macku, Hahli was unexpectedly entered into the first Kolhii Championship, eventually qualifying for the final round at Ta-Koro Kolhii Stadium. Entertaining a sporting rivalry with Hewkii and Jaller, Hahli and Macku were able to win the Kolhii Tournament for Ga-Koro, despite Ta-Koro and Po-Koro being favored to win.

Following the Kolhii Tournament, however, Jaller was known to have dropped a Kanohi mask on the field, which shone its light upon him. Remaining in the village square after the tournament, Hahli witnessed Turaga Nokama studying the inscription and revealing that it was the long-lost Kanohi Avohkii destined to be worn by a Toa of Light. Once Jaller and Takua had been tasked with finding the mysterious seventh Toa somewhere on the island, Hahli bid her friend farewell, remaining in Ta-Koro for the victory ceremony.

However, endeavoring to destroy the Mask of Light and rule Mata Nui unchallenged, Makuta dispatched three Rahkshi to Ta-Koro. Despite being warned by Toa Gali, the village's Matoran defenses were swiftly overpowered by the raw strength of their adversaries. With Tahu and Gali rescuing a number of Matoran from direct confrontation with the Rahkshi, Hahli was instructed to open the drawbridge and allow the citizens of Ta-Koro to escape. Once she had ensured the citizens of Ta-Koro escape, Hahli and her fellow Matoran watched as the internal structures of the village weakened, slowly plunging into the volcano.

Hahli would later travel to Kini Nui with the Turaga, having heard that Takua had completed his quest and become the Seventh Toa, Takanuva. As the Toa Nuva constructed the Ussanui to Takanuva's specifications, Hahli would christen the vehicle with Jaller's Kanohi. Spurred on by the death of Jaller, however, Takanuva resolved to travel alone, using the vehicle to venture deep into the Makuta's lair and confront him, leaving the other Toa behind on the surface. For some time, Hahli was able to stow away in one of the compartments of the vehicle, accompanying the Toa of Light to the Mangaia lair before returning to the surface. After informing the Toa Nuva and Turaga that Takanuva now faced Makuta, Hahli was able to convince them to descend into the tunnels beneath Kini Nui and confront the master of Shadows by invoking the sacrifice of Jaller and their duty to awaken the Great Spirit.

After some deliberation, Hahli would lead the Toa Nuva and Turaga into Teridax's Lair deep in the caverns beneath Kini Nui. After witnessing Takanuva defeat the Makuta, Hahli also bore witness to the creation of Takutanuva, a fusion between the Makuta and Toa. In the moments before Takanutanuva's sacrifice, he summoned Hahli closer and sacrificed his consciousness to restore life to Jaller and open the gates of the Great Barrier before growing unstable and separating. With Takanuva and his Matoran companion restored, Hahli was reunited with Jaller and was able to proclaim victory over the Makuta, who was assumed to have been killed by the weight of the barrier.

Return to Metru Nui[]

Later, after the defeat of Teridax by Takanuva, Hahli aided in the construction of boats to return to Metru Nui when the island city was rediscovered. However, Hahli's primary focus during this time was documenting the tales of Metru Nui and the Toa Metru, which were recounted to her and the Toa Nuva by Turaga Vakama.

Hahli would notably accompany Vakama in a boat to Metru Nui. Over the course of the voyage, the Turaga would disclose the final tale of his time as a Toa to her, recounting his confrontation with Makuta and The Shadowed One for possession of the Kanohi Vahi. Landing in the city alongside the entire population of Mata Nui, Hahli then helped repair Ga-Metru and the rest of the island, acclimatizing to her role as Chronicler.

Several days after their arrival, word reached the Matoran that the Toa Nuva had left the island on a dangerous mission in search of the Kanohi Ignika, the Mask of Life. Upon discovering this news, Jaller began a silent protest, entreating the island's entire Matoran population to lay down their tools until the Turaga revealed the nature of the mission. Mounting a rescue effort to follow the Toa to Voya Nui, Hahli joined Jaller, Hewkii, Kongu, Nuparu, Hewkii, Matoro, and Takanuva on a mission to Voya Nui.

Launching a coordinated attack on each facet of the Piraka's operation, Hahli partnered with Jaller, Dalu, and Piruk, traveling to Mount Valmai intent on freeing the enslaved Matoran from their captivity. Equipped with modified Zamor Launchers capable of purging the Antidermis infection, Dalu notably argued with Toa Hahli during the liberation of the Matoran, perceiving the Toa of Water to be excessively passive and lacking the necessary motivation to truly empathize with the Matoran. Once they had completed their objective, Hahli and her allies joined the other Toa Inika on their ensuing assault of the Piraka Stronghold.

Abilities and Traits[]

As a Toa of Water, Hahli could create, control, and absorb liquid. This also gave her the ability to manipulate most forms of Liquid Protodermis, alter the humidity of a target area, trigger tsunamis, and conjure rainstorms.

Mask and Tools[]

While residing on Metru Nui, Hahli was known to have wielded a Kanoka Disk Launcher, which she notably left behind in Ga-Metru. After settling in Ga-Koro, Hahli fashioned a Bamboo Disk to defend herself with. She would later come to carry a Kolhii Staff.

For the majority of her life, Hahli wore a powerless Kaukau, the Mask of Water Breathing. This Kanohi was notably surrendered to Karzahni during Hahli's passage to Voya Nui and was exchanged for a new powerless Kanohi.

As a Toa Inika, Hahli wore a Great Elda, the Mask of Detection. This Kanohi allowed her to view nearby hidden beings and objects invisible to the naked eye, including users of the Kanohi Huna or Iden. While on Voya Nui, Hahli's Elda notably enabled her to detect her teammate Matoro while he was using his Kanohi Iden, as well as objects of power from across the Matoran Universe, such as the Kanohi Ignika.

Hahli was equipped with a Laser Harpoon, a powerful tool capable of launching energy harpoons and channeling her elemental powers. She was also equipped with a multi-shot Zamor Launcher, crafted by Velika and Nuparu.

As a Toa Mahri, Hahli's Kanohi was transformed into a Faxon, the Mask of Kindred. This Kanohi allowed her to replicate specific traits of Rahi sharing her general environment and could store previously-utilized techniques for later use. The mask, however, did not permit her to communicate with other Rahi, alter her physical form, or mimic Rahi that she had not first observed.

In the Pit, Hahli's weapons were transformed into Protosteel Talons, a versatile melee weapon capable to grasping objects, cutting through most metals and channeling elemental powers.
