Guard Duty is a side-story about Frasair and his journey to Kehidupan in the Akilini off-season. It is the first published side-story in the Ignika Universe Saga.

Story[]

With the Akilini season on break, Frasair could have some time to himself. He did enjoy Akilini games, but they were tiring to referee. The Matoran took the game much more seriously than they did Kohlii.

Frasair had been a referee for the last 20 years, retiring from Kohlii after the war. He liked his life now, finding it much simpler. It was a better time nowadays, when their worst fear was a Rahi attack rather than death and destruction of the Great Spirit Robot.

Today Frasair went to visit Kehidupan, the capital of Zivot. He had to admit, he could not remember the last time he entered the great city. When he played Kohlii, he was on a team with Chirto, a fellow Po-Matoran. They always got along very well. Chirto was now one of the most famous Akilini players, his team The Defenders currently at the top of the standings in the Zivot Akilini Tournament.

Kohlii never had such structure, just a few tournaments to prevent the same old routine when performing maintenance on the Great Spirit Robot.

Frasair reminisced his past as he completed the walk from Olahraga to Kehidupan, greeted by the guard Hisu at the gate.

“State your name and duty!”

Did they really have to do this every time?

“Frasair, here to visit from Olahraga,” he said, sceptical if Hisu remembered him.

“Good to see you, Frasair,” Hisu replied. “How’s refereeing treating you?”

That was unexpected.

“It’s well,” Frasair was a little surprised the guard had time for a conversation. “How’s guard duty?”

Hisu chuckled. “You’d be surprised what we get to see,” he said, gesturing to his fellow guard, a purple armoured Ba-Matoran, who smiled at Frasair.

“I’ll best be on my way, then,” Frasair said. This was the most he had ever spoken to Hisu.

“Of course, of course!” Hisu laughed. “Do enjoy our great city!”

Frasair found that when he wasn’t talking about Akilini or Kohlii, things felt more awkward. He did enjoy the company of others and the sport he refereed, but he longed for knowledge in something else. Perhaps he would visit the Kehidupan Library, he pondered, as he marched through the gates.

“Frasair! Get down!”

Hisu pushed the Po-Matoran out of the way, Frasair tumbling on the ground. A Jastreb swooped, its talons slashing Hisu’s back.

“Away! Away!” the other guard yelled, waving his sword.

“Hisu,” Frasair stood up and went over to his friend. “Thank you.”

Frasair wasn’t used to friends, never really interacting with Chirto outside of Akilini games.

“Take him inside, Frasair,” the guard barked, attention focused on the circling hawk.

Frasair carried the Po-Matoran on his shoulders, leaving the sword and shield behind.

“Where is the medical centre?!” he cried.

“To the… left…” Hisu mumbled.

“Don’t speak, friend,” Frasair said.

Frasair made it to the medical centre, some Onu-Matoran and Ce-Matoran taking Hisu behind closed doors.

It felt like an eternity, but an Onu-Matoran returned.

“Greetings,” he said, a certain authority in his voice. “I am Roko, the Chief Medical Officer.”

“Frasair,” the Po-Matoran replied.

“Hisu will be fine, though he just started his guard shift,” Roko said. “You’ll need to find someone to replace him so that he actually stays with us.”

“What do you mean?” Frasair didn’t understand what Roko was saying.

“Come with me,” he sighed, leading him through the doors and down a corridor.

They reached a room and entered, Hisu sitting up on a bed.

“Frasair,” Hisu said. “Can you… do my guard duty for me? Only until nightfall.”

“Of course,” Frasair said straight away. He wasn’t sure why.

And so Frasair was thanked and headed out to the gate of Kehidupan, picking up the sword and shield from the Ba-Matoran, who introduced himself as Boson.

Frasair found out a lot about himself as he finished the shift as guard. Not many Matoran noticed that he replaced Hisu, and even less wanted to chat. He came to appreciate and respect Hisu’s position.

As the night approached, Frasair stretched his joints and began to pace. Guard duty was uneventful, which he supposed was a good thing.

“A bit restless, are we?” said a deep voice from the road.

Frasair returned to his position with haste, to which he heard Boson snicker at. He could now see that the voice was Odron’s, the Toa Neirae of Stone.

“Boson, I hope the writing is going well,” the Toa said.

“It’s coming along well, sir Odron,” Boson replied.

Odron smiled and looked Frasair up and down.

“Don’t tell me…” he said, a puzzling look on his face. “Akilini referee… former Kohlii player… Frasair!”

It brought a grin to Frasair’s face that Odron knew who he was.

“I bet you’re enjoying the off-season,” he added. “Though I didn’t expect guard duty to be part of your holiday.”

“Thank you,” Frasair said, still a little stunned. “I’m filling in for Hisu.”

“He was swooped by a Jastreb,” said Boson. “Saved Frasair from it.”

“Is that so?” Odron thought out loud. “Well, power to you, Frasair. It’s a generous thing you’re doing here for Hisu. I’m sure he appreciates it.”

“Thank you,” Frasair managed to blurt out.

Hisu would definitely appreciate this. I’ll make an effort to see him next off season.
