Grefar is a Turaga of Ice and the first Turaga ever created.

History

Turaga Grefar was created by the Great Beings as the first of his kind. He was installed on the island of Metru Nui to oversee the Matoran population to ensure that they operated as programmed. At some point, he stepped down from this role for unknown reasons and joined the secretive Order of Mata Nui, becoming the only Turaga to serve the clandestine organization.

At some point, Grefar compiled reports from Order agents Jerbraz, Johmak, and Tobduk into an atlas authored by the Order's leader Helryx.

When Makuta Teridax took control of the Matoran Universe, he used his powers to destroy the Order's headquarters on Daxia. However, Grefar managed to escape destruction and went into hiding along with the rest of the Order's surviving members. Following Teridax's defeat at the hands of Mata Nui, Grefar migrated to the restored planet of Spherus Magna, where he was given the task of informing the native Agori and Glatorian of the events that had occurred within the Matoran Universe.

Abilities and Traits

As a Turaga, Grefar has control over the element of Ice, although his power is not as strong compared to that of a Toa.

Masks and Tools

Grefar wears a Noble Kanohi Kakama, the Mask of Speed.

Trivia

• Turaga Grefar is an homage to Greg Farshtey, the author of the BIONICLE books and one of the head story writers, with Grefar's name being a portmanteau of Farshtey's. His element and Kanohi mask (Ice and Kakama respectively) are reportedly Farshtey's favorite or preferred element or mask.
• Grefar's name and role as the author of the atlas in BIONICLE World was suggested in a question to Greg Farshtey, which Farshtey indicated support for in typical Greg fashion (i.e. "Arguably").
