Greatgrass was a common species of tall grass found on Powai Nui which composed much of the island's plant biomass and proved important to the island's Matoran inhabitants.

Physiology[]
Greatgrass took the form of over-sized tall grass, alternating in hue from green to yellow. Most specimens averaged 30 feet tall, although this was subject to change depending on the climate and altitude. When yellow, a greatgrass plant would reveal seeds at the top, which could be harvested to make rice.
The plant had several unique properties other than its size that set it apart from other grass species. The most notable was its very low density, making the average specimen weigh only mere ounces and allowing it to stand tall without snapping under its own weight. It was also fairly strong and flexible to withstand wind. Greatgrass's more anomalous property was its high resistance to electricity, electric currents, and electricity-induced heat. Specimens were observed to have been struck directly by lightning and survive with minimal damage. Tests concluded that took much more heat to burn if electricity was flowing through it than if there were no electrical activity.

Greatgrass was the single most common species of non-microscopic lifeform on Powai Nui. It was estimated to have comprised an entire half of the island's plant biomass and 30% of its total biomass. Despite this, it was restricted to growing in the hilly grasslands of Vo-Powai. There, its ability to prevent lightning-induced forest fires proved an invaluable asset to the ecosystem of a region known for its sporadic and intense thunderstorms. It did not grow anywhere else due to that fact that too much or too little rainfall was detrimental to its growth.
Usages[]
As the most common species on Powai Nui, multiple usages of greatgrass were discovered by the island's Matoran inhabitants. Most prominent was its usage in agriculture, as greatgrass provided rice-like seeds that became Powai Nui's staple food. Its fibers could also be used to make a specialized type of natural rubber, which retained the plant's high electrical resistance, a material which proved useful on an island where thunderstorms, rudimentary electric appliances, and less-than-reliable Vo-Matoran were common.
