The Golden Mask of the Skull Spiders is is one of a multitude of Golden Masks crafted by the Mask Maker Makuta and hidden upon the island of Okoto.
History[]
The Golden Mask of Skull Spiders was created many thousands of years ago by Makuta, who aspired to one day usurp his brother, Ekimu, as the most venerated Mask Maker on Okoto. It is said to have been carved from unknown elemental crystals and infused with dark magic. Originally intended as a means of communicating with the island's abundant wildlife, the mask proved to have more sinister capabilities, asserting a telepathic hold over the Skull Spider brood. Deemed an unacceptable and highly immoral mask, Makuta hid his creation in a fortress located towards the west of the Ice Region, in the Great Peaks, where it would remain beyond the reach of anyone who sought to weaponize the Skull Spiders.
With the location of the mask known only to Makuta and a handful of Ice Region natives, the site would eventually be lost to the ravages of time following the supposed death of Makuta. For many thousands of years, the Golden Mask of Skull Spiders was known to have resided within the ice Region.
However, under unclear circumstances, the Golden Mask came to be acquired by the Lord of Skull Spiders, whose used the mask to assert his dominance over the island's Skull Spider populace and command the swarms to turn openly hostile upon the Okotan villagers. As a result, many settlements in the Jungle Region came to be overwhelmed, prompting the era's Protectors to recite the Prophecy of Heroes and summon the Elemental Masters to Okoto.
