The Frost Beetle was a breed of large predatory Rahi, widely regarded as the apex predator of colder regions of the Great Spirit Robot.
History[]
The Frost Beetles were originally created by Makuta Orriki and the Makuta of Stelt using viruses and Liquid Protodermis to be one of the species to inhabit the Matoran Universe. Genetically engineered to secrete a powerful enzyme found originally in Skakdi, the Frost Beetles were intended to populate arctic regions of the Great Spirit Robot.
Distributed across the Matoran Universe, the Frost Beetle species revealed itself to be an extremely predatory Rahi breed, using its heavy armor and heightened intelligence to carve a position for itself at the top of the arctic food chain. Adapting to these colder ecosystems, the Frost Beetles refused to integrate themselves into Matoran life.
In Metru Nui, a Frost Beetle colony notably established itself in the vicinity of the Knowledge Towers. Constantly endeavoring to consume Memory Crystals, the Rahi would often come into conflict with Ko-Matoran scholars and Vahki Keerakh alike. Eventually, the Ko-Matoran of the district began a practice of deliberately storing Memory Crystals containing misinformation in the lower levels of Knowledge Towers for the Frost Beetles to devour, whilst storing their most valuable Memory Crystals higher up.
A Ce-Matoran colony was known to exist in harmony with a Frost Beetle population in the Southern Island Chain, offering supplies of Memory Crystals and training the Rahi to guard their village.
Following the Battle of Bara Magna and subsequent Reformation of Spherus Magna, the majority of the Matoran Universe's Frost Beetle population was evacuated onto the surface of a new world, though several colonies remained trapped in colder depths. They have come to flourish in the colder drifts of the Northern Mountains.
Abilities and Traits[]
Abundant in arctic temperatures across the Matoran Universe, the Frost Beetle species characteristically thrived in small hunting parties. Possessing poor stamina, Frost Beetles were often weighed down by their heavy armor-plating, which formed naturally during adolescence. They were also fond of ramming and trampling their hapless prey.
Frost Beetles typically had poor eyesight but possessed highly developed senses of taste and smell. They fed primarily on Memory Crystals but were known to consume algae and other plant life, as well as small Rahi. Frost Beetles have also been known to share their territory with Frostelus and Ice Bats, though their temperamental behavior rarely led to a lasting co-existence with other Rahi species.
The Frost Beetle was the apex predator within its range, and served as a keystone species for arctic regions of the Matoran Universe. Fully matured Frost Beetles were occasionally vulnerable to predation by Zyglak, however.
