The Fikou were a breed of commonplace spider-Rahi.
History[]
The Fikou species were originally created by Makuta Bitil using viruses and Liquid Protodermis to be one of the species to inhabit the Matoran Universe. Genetically engineered to secrete a powerful enzyme found originally in Skakdi, the Fikou were intended to chemically reconstitute withered vegetation, along with many other Rahi.
Distributed across the Matoran Universe, the Fikou exhibited varying levels of sociality, gathering in colonies of several dozen and constructing complex web systems to capture prey. Across the Matoran Universe, Fikou were often captured to produce web for commercial use.
In Metru Nui, there was known to exist a significant Fikou population in the quieter regions of Le-Metru and dark recesses of Onu-Metru. In an effort to preserve the species, a number of specimens were relocated to the Onu-Metru Archives, with the deeper sublevels of the structure nicknamed the Fikou Web.
Following the Great Cataclysm, the Fikou population continued to reconstitute their surroundings in the absence of Matoran. With the arrival of the Visorak Horde upon the island, however, the overwhelming majority of Fikou migrated to the island of Mata Nui, pursuing a less hostile habitat in the region of Le-Wahi and coming to principally inhabit the forest floor.
A Southern Universe Fikou specimen
As a direct consequence of the Visorak Invasion of Metru Nui, a number of Fikou were infected with Hordika Venom. Making their way south through emergency tunnels and Chutes, these specimens eventually settled on the Southern Continent, where they reproduced with the regional population to create a subspecies carrying their mutation. As a result, many Fikou in the Southern Matoran Universe developed more potent venom sacs as well as stinger tails and more pronounced pincers.
In the months after the Battle of Bara Magna and subsequent Reformation of Spherus Magna, the majority of the Matoran Universe's Fikou population was evacuated onto the surface of a new world, though several colonies remained trapped. Seeking to rescue Rahi, the Toa Hagah were known to have been instrumental in transporting many different species from the decaying Matoran Universe, allowing the Fikou to flourish in the jungle biomes of Spherus Magna.
Abilities and Traits[]
Generally, the Fikou species was known to have lived in harmony with the Matoran population, rarely attacking unless provoked. Mostly carnivorous, Fikou typically fed on the pre-digested bodies of insects and other small Rahi, often spinning webs to capture Protodites.
Distinguished from most insect-Rahi breeds by their powerful pincers and elongated abdomen, the Fikou were equipped with two further pairs of appendages, which were adapted for feeding, defense, and sensory perception.
Several specimens found in the Southern Matoran Universe were adapted to secrete venom from specialized glands to kill prey or enemies. Typically found around the Southern Continent, this sub-species was also equipped with a powerful stinger tail.
