Elemental Kanohi were a sub-variety of Kanohi created from Toa Disks, which allowed users to manipulate an Elemental Power to a limited extent.
History[]
The first generation of Elemental Kanohi traces its origins back to some of the later waves of mask-making techniques adopted in the Matoran Universe, where Artakha and his Matoran apprentices crafted an unclear number of Elemental Masks from Elementally-charged Toa Disks some time prior to the Great Disruption.
Greatly favored and sought after by the Matoran populace, only a handful of these Elemental Kanohi came into circulation given the rarity of Elemental Kanoka, which were most commonly produced as a byproduct of a Matoran's conversion into a Toa. A very limited number of newly-transformed Toa willingly parted ways with their Toa Disks, further restricting the number of Elemental Kanohi. As such, very few Elemental Kanohi were known to exist in the entire Matoran Universe, the exact number being somewhat of a guarded secret by Toa and avid collectors alike.
Elemental Kanohi became especially appealing to some of the hardier species of the Matoran Universe, with the Dark Hunters indulging in their trade.
Charging themselves with defending Metru Nui in the absence of an existing Toa Team, the Toa Mangai would later rely upon a Mask of Ice to subdue the Kanohi Dragon, a powerful Rahi that had been unleashed on Metru Nui by a band of Dark Hunters. Crafted by a Ta-Matoran named Vakama, this Mask of Ice would come to serve as a ceremonial secondary Kanohi passed between various members of the Toa Team.
Most notably, Toa Hewkii was known to have worn a Garai, the Mask of Gravity, as a Toa Mahri during his quest to restore Mata Nui by claiming the Ignika from the Pit. Interestingly, this Garai was created by the Ignika without a Toa Disk.
