Ehlek's Species were a race that resided in the oceans around Zakaz.

History[]

Shortly after the successful departure of the Great Spirit Robot from Spherus Magna, Mata Nui became somewhat overeager with the creation of new species to serve additional functions, resulting in the plethora of different species that would come to inhabit the Matoran Universe. Ehlek's species was one such creation, possessing natural endurance for hardier terrain. During this time, a number of early Order of Mata Nui scientists would genetically advance the species in the hopes of breeding a legion of warriors capable of overwhelming Makuta, notably fitting them with Protosteel Talons.

Initially conceived alongside the Skakdi with the superfluous intention of maintaining Zakaz - the region of the Matoran Universe where harmful chemicals, materials, and waste were transported - the species was charged with recycling and purifying the waters surrounding the land, inhabiting the island's central lake and its surrounding waters. The species were able to naturally purify any harmful toxins that made their way to the surface, thus ensuring the environmental equilibrium of the Zakaz dome was maintained.

An especially powerful Kanohi Zatth was known to have been stored in a sunken temple in the Zakaz dome by the Great Beings. More powerful than a regular great Kanohi, this version was intended to summon some of the First Rahi. Ehlek's Species were charged with safe-guarding the location of this particular Zatth, though The Awakening caused the exact location of this temple to slip from their cultural consciousness.

During the early history of the Matoran Universe, Ehlek was selected as the warrior-leader and the species became one of the component members of the League of Six Kingdoms. Many members of his species would leave their homeland and pledge themselves to his army, which occupied the western regions of the universe, along with Zakaz.

80,000 years ago, Ehlek's species were poised to conquer the Matoran Universe, along with their allies in the League of Six Kingdoms. Once it became clear that the Barraki warlords intended to denounce Mata Nui, however, the Toa and Brotherhood of Makuta joined forces to defeat the Barraki and capture their armies. With Ehlek removed from power and widely believed to have been executed, the rest of his forces were captured or killed.

Having failed in their bid for universal conquest, attitudes towards the species turned sour and they were shunned to the waterways around Zakaz. It is generally considered that the species fell from prominence and was considered to have died off, many of its surviving members falling as a result of League of Six Kingdoms hostilities.

However, roughly 75,000 years ago, following a number of experiments conducted by Makuta Spiriah, the Skakdi natives of Zakaz were evolved into a more barbaric state and became incapable of cleansing the land. Spiriah's influence on the native population was so fundamental that the Skakdi species devolved into a series of warring factions. As the Skakdi Civil War raging on the surface, Ehlek's species continued their underwater purifying operations, collecting and treating greater quantities of aquatic debris in order to prevent the island from becoming polluted and to ensure the continued functionality of the Great Spirit Robot. This action resulting in much animosity and resentment towards the Skakdi, the implication being that they had abandoned their duties in favor of heedless barbarism.

Any surviving members of Ehlek's species have since abandoned the Great Spirit Robot after it was rendered uninhabitable.

Abilities and Traits[]

Ehlek's species were generally peaceful and tolerant in nature. As a water-dwelling species, they possessed natural gills and were unable to venture above the surface for extended periods of time for risk of dehydration. Members of the species had, however, been known to travel the surface using breathing apparatus.

Following the Order of Mata Nui's genetic tampering, the species developed enhanced physical strength and Protosteel talons. While their initially behavior appeared largely unchanged, it is likely that the procedure garnered long-term effects, inciting the rivalry between the species and their surface-dwelling counterparts, the Skakdi.

The species could wear and use Kanohi but generally chose not to.
