- "You can ever-hide down there in your shadows. You can try and pick us off one by one. But you killed my best friend, and for that you’ll pay. Even if it takes me a lifetime, I heart-swear I’ll see you burn in whatever hell spawned you."
- ―Defilak to Kalmah, Rock Bottom: Remastered
Defilak is a Le-Matoran inventor from Mahri Nui. He was appointed the Emergency Interim Council Leader by Dekar after Kyros murdered Lemiddus and fled the city.
History[]
Defilak spent his early years travelling between the three villages of his home island of Torva, facilitating trading between all three. Over time, his trading business expanded to include nearby islands, and eventually even to the larger continents in the north. Sometimes he travelled alone, other times he travelled with a larger caravan. During this time, he developed a knack for mechanical work, having to deal with broken down transports, weapons, and tools, particularly after the mechanic of a caravan he travelled with frequently lost his right hand in a Visorak attack. During this time, Defilak visited multiple prominent islands in the Matoran Universe, including Stelt and Xia, and spent several years in Metru Nui, during which time he partially picked up the local Le-Matoran dialect of chute-speak.
This period was brought to a violent end when a boating accident on the shores of Xia resulted in Defilak being sent to Karzahni. There his body was rebuilt to be smaller and weaker, and then he was sent to the most uninhabited parts of the Southern Continent to hide Karzahni's failure. Defilak settled in a small village on the edge of the region that would become Voya Nui. When the Great Cataclysm launched the island into the Endless Ocean, Defilak survived. He remained in his small village, which over time would slowly grow into a small city named Mahri Nui.
Life in Mahri Nui[]
Defilak survived when Mahri Nui sank into the Voya Nui Bay. His mechanical expertise proved useful while the Matoran adapted to life at the bottom of the Bay, and he was given an old, unstable warehouse as a workshop to help facilitate his inventing. He settled in to his life here, scavenging for scraps of metal and other useful materials off of the sea floor to invent with. At some point he began work on subaquatic vehicles that would allow Matoran to travel safely outside the Air Domes at times other than the safe hour and at distances from the city unachievable with only the air found in one's personal bubble.
About ten years after Mahri Nui sank into the Voya Nui Bay, Defilak discovered the body of a dead Vampire Squid that was clearly killed by a large predator. When Gemini interrupted a Council meeting to inform Dekar that Kyrehx, Defilak persuaded Gemini to let him follow Dekar out of the meeting by promising to expedite fixing a Thornax Launcher he was repairing for the Su-Matoran. Defilak shared his discovery with Dekar and Kaira.
Defilak was included in Dekar's expedition into the Black Water to discover what had forced the Vampire Squid up into the water around Mahri Nui. This expedition was made using the submersible Defilak had been developing to explore further away from the city. To his frustration, his long-time rival Feton was included as well as a backup inventor in case something happening to Defilak. The two bickered throughout the entire expedition, even when they discovered a Toa floating in the Black Water and were attacked by Kalmah. Defilak managed to pilot them back to Mahri Nui safely, but not before Kalmah killed Sarda.
Upon returning to Mahri Nui, Defilak watched helplessly as Kyros murdered Lemiddus and fled with the Kanohi Ignika. After Kyros left, Dekar appointed Defilak the temporary Council Leader of Mahri Nui until Kyros and Kalmah were dealt with. Shortly thereafter, Defilak went searching for his best friend Gar, only to find his chewed up Kanohi at the edge of the Black Water. Recognizing the signs of one of Kalmah's attack, Defilak swore vengeance against the monster.
Personality and Traits[]
Defilak is a reclusive and awkward Le-Matoran, preferring to search the sea floor for scraps of metal and other bits of random mechanical parts than to socialize with other Matoran. He isn't much of a public speaker and often gets tongue tied and slips deeper into Chute-speak when speaking with people he does not know well. His closest friend was the Onu-Matoran Gar, both of whom typically drove others away with their difficult personalities but had found they didn't have the same effect on each other. He has a long-standing rivalry with the Fe-Matoran inventor Feton, with whom he has often argued with over rare parts to use on his creations.
Defilak's greatest strength is his out of the box solutions for puzzling problems, both while inventing and in difficult situations. Dekar chose him as a leader because of this, his ability to stay calm in a crisis, and because he detected the seeds of a good leader inside the Le-Matoran.
Powers and Equipment[]
As a Le-Matoran, Defilak has a higher degree of natural athleticism and nimbleness. Defilak is also a skilled mechanic and inventor, being capable of fixing or building a number of complicated machines with limited materials. He is adept at using a wide variety of tools and other equipment, and is good at discerning the functionality of mechanical devices.
After Mahri Nui sunk into the Voya Nui Bay, the small amount of mutagen he was exposed to gave him a stronger, sleeker form more suited to his new environment. He wears a dark green Kanohi Kualsi to match his armor.
