The Cordak Gunblade was a melee weapon that fused Cordak Blasters and swords. Created by both Vortixx and Nynrah Ghost artisans, it was notable across the Matoran Universe as a rare but powerful weapon.

History[]

Shortly after the Cordak Blaster was created, the Order of Mata Nui commissioned the gunblade from Xian and Nynrah Ghost inventors, seeking to develop a weapon that could more easily utilize the blaster’s destructive ammo. The Order conscripted the veteran Toa of Air Rorohu to test the prototype blades, hoping he could later train its members to utilize the weapon. Throughout the rigorous development process, it was decided that the gunblades were too dangerous for wide use and most records of the tool’s creation were destroyed. Ultimately, the finished product proved to be too unwieldy and difficult to effectively fight with, leaving the Order to officially scrap the project. Most prototypes remaining were cast aside or destroyed, leaving only a few occasional wielders.

The Order member Hydraxon was known to briefly use the gunblade, wondering if it could supplement his regular tools. This particular blade would be infrequently used for combat, but was enough of a reliable weapon that its wielder brought it with him to the Pit. It would last until the Great Cataclysm, where Hydraxon perished and the blade itself rusted when exposed to Aqua Magna’s mutating waters.

After he was dismissed by the Order, Rorohu became a wandering hero and frequently used the Cordak Gunblade as a Toa Tool. His sheer mastery of the weapon gave it a sense of mystique across the wider Matoran Universe. The Toa would attempt to pass on his techniques to those willing to learn, but unfortunately the gunblade required too much skill for an average user. Rorohu himself would later be assassinated by the Dark Hunters, his wandering heroism proving to be enough of a nuisance. His gunblade was broken in the conflict and its shattered halves would be buried alongside the Toa.

A particular Cordak Gunblade would be kept by one of its creators, the Nynrah Ghost Ophex, who maintained the weapon and sought to keep the masterpiece in working condition. He would keep it throughout his life, eventually bringing the blade to Spherus Magna. The gunblade would end up in the hands of Raeys, a rookie Toa of Fire. Gifted the weapon by his allies as a means of improving his mental health, the young Toa would quickly take to the gunblade, slowly mastering the weapon akin to his predecessors. Raeys would become one of the Cordak Gunblade’s more notable wielders, though the tool never took off and remained in obscurity.

Function[]

The Cordak Gunblade fused the Cordak Blaster’s powerful shots with traditional swordplay: the weapon was designed to utilize the destructive Cordak Rockets to increase the power of an attack. Additionally, the weapon was developed to combat Firearms across the Matoran Universe, shattering guns using the weapon’s destructive force. The gunblade could also channel a Toa’s Elemental Powers. However, the blade’s raw power made it difficult to use and a poorly-trained user could easily injure themselves while using the weapon. Several inexperienced users also failed to understand the weapon’s design and attempted to use it as though it were a simple firearm.

Despite this, several of the gunblade’s users were capable of mastering the weapon’s potential. Notably, Raeys' elemental powers allowed him greater control over the explosive rounds, letting the Toa of Fire truly master the weapon in a way few could. The Toa could create a targeted explosion as the weapon passed through an opponent, boosting his damage; or explode the round early, using the residual powder to form a defensive barrier. Similarly, Rorohu utilized the Cordak’s recoil to boost himself around a battlefield, mixing this usage with his elemental control over Air.

Trivia[]

  • The Cordak Gunblade takes a somewhat obvious inspiration from the gunblades of Final Fantasy, particularly those from 8 and 14.
    • It is also somewhat inspired by the Outrage from Guilty Gear and the Red Queen from Devil May Cry. Both are flame-based weapons that feature a “boost” to damage in some way.
