The Catapult Scorpion was a breed of scorpion-like Rahi.
History[]
The Catapult Scorpion species was originally created by Makuta Chirox using viruses and Liquid Protodermis to be one of the species to inhabit the Matoran Universe. Genetically engineered to secrete a powerful enzyme found originally in Skakdi, the Catapult Scorpions were intended to chemically reconstitute withered vegetation, along with many other Rahi.
Due to their tolerance for multiple environmental conditions, Catapult Scorpions were widely distributed across the Matoran Universe, adapting most prominently to desert ecosystems around the Great Spirit Robot. Over the course of several years, the species revealed themselves to be a particularly predatory and ill-tempered breed of Rahi, dominating most desert food chains. Sharing an ecosystem with various other species, the Catapult Scorpions came to develop a natural rivalry with larger land Rahi, such as the Kikanalo and Nui-Jaga. Generally, the Catapult Scorpions were known to have lived in isolation from the Matoran population. As such, members of the species characteristically thrived in isolation.
In Metru Nui, the Catapult Scorpion population was known to have taken up residence in the less developed regions of Po-Metru. Customarily, members of the species would stalk Kikanalo packs and feed off of Metallic Protodermis and mineral deposits left behind.
As the gaps in the Metru Nui map closed up and processes of modernization saw the expansion of urban areas into Catapult Scorpion grazing territory, the species began venturing into populated areas, often coming into conflict with Po-Matoran crafters while scavenging. Frequently, Vahki Zadakh would be dispatched to apprehend Catapult Scorpion only for the Rahi to scurry away before capture.
In the years after the Great Cataclysm, the Catapult Scorpion population of Po-Metru emerged from hiding, damaging a number of Matoran dwellings and triggering landslides in quarries across the district. With the arrival of the Visorak Horde upon the island, however, the overwhelming majority of Catapult Scorpions remained in Po-Metru, continuing to hunt beneath the Sculpture Fields.
When the Great Spirit Robot suffered critical damage, the surviving Catapult Scorpions emigrated to Spherus Magna. Many have chosen the Great Barren as their primary habitat, though the Po-Metru populations seem to have migrated to the Black Spike Mountains in pursuit of larger prey.
Abilities and Traits[]
Abundant in arid regions of the Matoran Universe, Catapult Scorpions characteristically thrived amidst desert plains of the Matoran Universe, regulating the populations of species below them in their respective food chain. Regarded as one of the most reviled species of Rahi in the Matoran Universe, the Catapult Scorpions triggered a deep-seated, primordial fear in many observers, most of which was centered around the stinger tail, the species' preferred method of defense. Able to hurl molten magma at a target, the species has proven especially formidable and can attack with little provocation.
The species was known to feed on an abundance of smaller Rahi, their diet spanning across notable species such as Husi, Pokawi, Taku, Infernavika, and Mahi. As one of the apex predators of the desert ecosystem, Catapult Scorpions often contended with Nui-Jaga, Kikanalo, Tunnel Stalkers and Phase Dragons for territory.
Carnivorous in nature, Catapult Scorpions typically hunt down their prey in crevices and small burrows, which provide refuge from the intense heat of the desert. Well-suited to camouflage, Catapult Scorpions can enter a state of hibernation when food is scarce, using their claws to crush prey into submission. The metabolic rate of a Stone Rat is notably faster than that of a dormant Catapult Scorpion.
