Builder's Duty is a side-story about Ronuo and his time as a builder on Memburu just after the Great Cataclysm War. It is the fourth published side-story in the Ignika Universe Saga.

Story[]

Ronuo pushed the boulders aside and placed his hand on the ground. He connected to the earth below. His spirit reached out and detected the nutrients in the soil and the density of the soil.

“Good and healthy,” he mumbled to himself. Ronuo enjoyed his time in solitude.

The Great Cataclysm War happened less than a year ago. Since then, the Onu-Matoran found himself alone again, just the way he liked it. Ronuo spent the most of a year building huts and buildings for other Matoran on Zivot.

He declined the “big jobs”, he recalled as he picked up the boulders to take them from the site. Ronuo was asked to build the castle in Kehidupan, which he declined. He placed a boulder next to a small tree as he balanced another large boulder in his other hand.

Ronuo liked compliments as much as he liked company – not at all. The Onu-Matoran placed the other boulder behind the small tree and returned to clear pebbles from the site of his hut.

Although the other Matoran in Memburu thanked him for his work, Ronuo wanted no such thing. Many of the other Onu-Matoran revered him as a “master builder”, something he did not agree with.

As a result of his apparent ability to build quickly and effectively, many Matoran requested huts and facilities from the builder. Ronuo did not mind the work, so long as he did the projects on his own.

Once the pebbles were clear, Ronuo carried over a cement slab and placed it on the small clearing. It reached the small trees on each side.

“Perfect…” he mumbled. Ronuo was fast to place the base slats and founding pillars. The four pillars had slots they inserted into on the slab. As an Onu-Matoran he could use his limited elemental Earth powers to manipulate the shape the cement set into, though not as well as a Po-Matoran could.

Although he did not like teamwork, he reflected that it was a good thing during the War. He carried two shields back then, when he fought an army of Bohrok, led by Toa Guild. Ronuo latched four stone walls to his hut.

It was important to be consistent as a builder. The Onu-Matoran leaned his ladder against the outside of his hut, the wooden roof in the other hand. Ronuo used one arm to scale the ladder on the top of a wall. He was careful to balance, as he always did.

With a heave, he tossed the roof, and it landed on the four walls. He did the same technique every time he built a hut for the other Matoran, and his hut was no different. Ronuo slid down the ladder and took it inside the hut.

The wood in the roof creaked against the light breeze. Ronuo thought to himself that it sounded like the cries the Bohrok made to summon their allies.

And just like that…

The hut collapsed.

Ronuo saw his allies turn to him, smiles on their faces. He never let a fellow Matoran down, and always watched his comrades’ backs.

“Thank you…” “You’re a master builder!” “I owe you.” “Look at the perfection here!” “Ronuo, thank you…”

His memories flooded his eyes. “Is this what it’s like at the end?” he thought.

“Don’t fret, Ronuo,” said a deep voice. He felt the Earth surround him, and watched it form a shell to protect him on the cave-in of his hut.

When the Earth moved away, his hut was a pile of scrap in the cleared site. He would have to start over.

He looked at his saviour – Toa Zemljotres of the Toa Neirae. Ronuo realised now that he had been speaking aloud when the hut collapsed.

“Th-thank you,” he stuttered, “Toa Zemljotres.”

The Toa of Earth nodded and carried on. That was the type of interaction Ronuo preferred – direct and concise. The Onu-Matoran returned the task of building his hut, having just been saved from an unusual situation by a brave Toa.
