Birth of an Assassin takes place in the Misplaced Alternate Universe during the Battle of Kada-Nui. This happens during The Great Escape.
Story[]
Chapter 1[]
Ballium and Arlana ran through the swamp known as Karda Nui. The Pair jumped over a fallen tree and crouched behind it.
"Did we lose her?" asked Arlana.
"That thing was a girl?" Ballium asked in a confused manner.
Arlana nodded. "That was Makuta Gorast, and she is complete and total..."
An explosion interrupted the Toa of Lightning as the log they hid behind blew up and sent the two flyings.
Ballium hit a tree in the distance as Arlana landed in the middle of the swamp. Makuta gorast landed nearby and lunged at the Toa of Electricity. As Arlana got to her feet, she extended her Lightning Pike and blasted a lightning bolt right into the makuta's shoulder.
As the bolt hit Gorast, the Makuta shot her Nynrah Ghost Blaster at Arlana, but due to the impact of the lightning bolt, the female Makuta missed her target's head and shot her shoulder instead. The shot sent the Toa flying backward into the ground.
When the Toa landed, Gorast rushed over with the speed of a hungry Kane-Ra. Within seconds she as upon her victim, thrusting her claws through the Toa's chest, killing her.
"No!" screamed Ballium as he recovered from his impact. Then, although disoriented, the Toa of Light charged at the Makuta with his sword.
Gorast wasted no time and reloaded her Blaster and shot at the charging Toa sticking right under his feet, sending the Toa into the air once again.
Ballium landed thirty feet away and lay sprawled in a heap. With one final glance over at his fallen teammate, it swiftly dawned upon the wounded Toa that he was outclassed. Making the most of the narrow window of opportunity, he raised his palm to release a flurry of lights that stunned the Makuta in her tracks.
In a blind fury, Gorast moved to shield her eyes. She snarled as vision returned to her all too slowly, revealing only broken branches and disturbed earth where Ballium had been.
The Toa had escaped...
Chapter 2[]
Zepharious was high in a tree when he heard an explosion nearby. Inclining his head in the direction of the sound, he saw a coil of black smoke rising from a nearby treeline.
An unusual sight amongst the untouched shrubbery of the Swamp of Secrets, but an accompanying cry drew his attention. Though he could not make out the words over the distance, he recognized the voice instantly as Ballium.
Donning his secondary Kanohi, a Great Miru, Zepharious levitated down to the swamp floor, scanning his surroundings with keen eyes until he at last spotted Gorast amongst the foliage. The Toa of Sonics spotted a white and blue body half-submerged in the swamp. As he approached, he saw that it had a white Kualsi. He knew her well it was Arlana.
Arlana was on the Toa Jemani with him, Zeparious' first Toa Team. She had been wise and adventurous and always made him smile even in the darkest times.
He looked around for Ballium but could not find him. He could only assume that he had been incinerated by the female Makuta's blaster shot.
Zepharious' sadness quickly turned into anger at the thought. Then, finally, he knew what he had to do...
Chapter 3[]
An Hour Later
Gorast was flying through the trees. She could not find the Toa of Light, but it did not matter; he was most likely bleeding out from his wounds, she thought.
Suddenly, something jumped on her back, and before she could do anything, a hook went through her wing. The two plummeted into the swamp.
As she got up across from her was a Mahiki waring Toa of Sound. It was Zepharious.
"You got lucky Toa, it won't happen again." The Makuta spat as she lunged at him.
Zepharious put his Sound Hooks together and shot a sound blast at the Makuta. Unfortunately, she plummeted backward as the shot hit her.
"I wouldn't be so sure about that Gorast!" Growled Zepharious as he readied himself for her to retaliate.
"Angry Toa?" the female makuta asked, noting the anger in the toa's voice.
"You have no idea," Zepharious replied as Gorast got up.
Gorast pointed her Nynrah Ghost Blaster at the Toa, but he was ready, and as she fired, he lunged to the side. She used this opportunity to close the distance she was close to Zepharious was; he got up, and the Toa lunged at the Makuta with his sound hook, but the makuta slashed her claw at the Toa hit him right on the Kanohi.
Zehparious felt his mask, and there was a scratch down the left side. Her claw barely missed his eye.
"Why are you so mad Toa, did I punch your favorite Matoran in the face or.." Gorast was interrupted
Gorast with a Sound Hook in her eye.
by one of Zeparius's Sound hooks flying through the air and sticking her directly in the eye.
"Ahh!" Screamed the Makuta while she ripped the Sound hook out of her eye and threw it into the swampy water.
"You talk too much," Zepharuous added as he smirked.
"You'll pay for that, Toa!" Shrieked the one-eyed makuta as she readied her claws to kill the Toa. "I'm done toying with you!"
"Good, I was getting bored!" Zepharious replied as the female Makuta slowly got angrier.
"I'm going to enjoy gutting you!" Gorast commented as the two charged at each other.
Chapter 4[]
Fifteen minutes of fighting has passed.
Zeparious was clawed in the side by Gorast as she lunged past him.
A sharp pain seared the toa of Sonic's side. Clutching at his side, he noticed he was bleeding. He was getting a bit tired, but the makuta was not letting up. Zeparious swung as she passed again, but she dodged the attack.
"Come on, Toa, is that all you got?" asked the female makuta.
Zeparious did not respond; he was studying his opponent's moves and thinking about staying on her left side due to her not being able to see on that side.
"What, no witty comeback?" she continued, "I was expecting you to say something idiotically heroic like all you toa types do." She lunged at him again after finishing talking.
He tried to defend himself with his last remaining sound hook, but the makuta tackled him, knocking his Toa Tool aside.
Gorast knelt above the exausted Toa. "I think I know why you are so mad at me, Toa." Gorast said."That Toa of Electricity and the Toa of light I killed, you knew them." She smirked as Zeparious' eyes widened.
The anger now filled the Toa; all the fighting distracted him from what had just happened, but now, He remembered Arlana's dead corpse with Gorast's claw mark in her chest. Zepariuos got his second wind even as Gorast lifted her clawed arm.
"Ever hear the phrase an eye for an eye toa?" Gorast asked as she jutted her arm down at The Toa's head. Zepraious jerked his head to the side, so the claw went in the dirt directly next to his head. Zepharious reached his arm and grabbed his sound hook without a second to lose. She jammed it behind Gorast's shoulder as he pushed the Makuta off him. The hook tore through her entire shoulder as muscle ribbed and boned snapped.
She stumbled backward as Zepariuos got up. "You see, hate is a really great motivator!" Zeparious commented as Gorast fell backward into the swamp. "And you continuing to talk about how you killed my team just helps me keep fighting!"
Gorast looked up at the Toa with disgust, "Now what, you arrest me?" she asked.
"No, actually, I'm going to kill you, you giant mutated insect." He replied.
"But.. you are a Toa, and they don't kill!" She exclaimed.
"The two you killed were Toa, but I?" Zeparuous shook his head, "I'm an assassin, and I don't have a problem killing filth like you." the toa approached the makuta. He got ready to raise his hook over the Makuta, who was bleeding out badly when she thrust her claw in his chest.
The Toa grunted but raised his Sound Hook anyway, "Nice final act of desperation but not Mata Nui himself could stop me from what I'm about to do."
Gorast looked up in horror as the Toa of Sonics lowered his hook into her forehead with all his might.
Chapter 5[]
Zepharious ripped his Sound hook out of Gorast's head as a green liquid oozed out of the makuta. As Zepharious backed up, a flash of electricity stuck the Antidermis and Metletd it, finishing off the Female Makuta once and for all. The Toa of Sonics' looked to the side to see a giant being with an axe lower his hand.
Before Zepharious could ask anything his collapsed from exhaustion and blood loss. He saw a Toa of Water rush over and pull out a Med-kit before he blacked out.
Chapter 6[]
When Zepharious came to, he saw three beings above him. His vision was blurred.
"He's waking up!" said the Toa of water.
"Zepharious, are you okay?" asked the Toa of Earth. Zepharious nodded as his vision got better.
He recognized the toa of Earth right as his vision was restored. "Bomonga, brother, it's great to see you!" Zepharious exclaimed as he tried to get up but was interrupted by pain and laid right back down.
"Easy, you've been through a lot." said the Toa of Water.
"Oh, where are my manners? This is Gaaki and Axonn!" Bomonga added.
"Oh, this is one of the toa that was part of the Toa Hagah Team you joined way back when right?" Zepharious asked.
Bomonga nodded as Axonn started to speak, "You showed impressive skill in defeating that makuta; the Order could use someone of your skill!"
Zeparious looked confused, "What Order?"
Axonn continued, "We perform the will of Mata Nui, and that's all you need to know unless you join. Bomonaga and Gaaki already joined, and we would be honored if you could join us."
Zepaious looked uneasy, "Maybe, but..." Then, looking down at the corpses of the makuta, remembering the harrowing fight, he replied, "I'm not worthy; I probably would have not been able to destroy Gorast's antidermis without your intervention."
"Nevertheless, you destroyed her armor, she was one of the most ferrous Makuta knows, and you were able to defeat her. In my opinion, you ARE worthy!" Axonn exclaimed.
Zeparious smirked, "Where do I sign up?"
Epilogue[]
After the Battle of Karda-Nui
Ballium gently placed Arlana's body in the grave he had just dug. He took off her mask and placed it in his bag. He but dirt over her body and muttered, "You in a better place now, sister, now rest, will ya?"
"I'm sorry for your loss!" said a voice behind the Toa of Light. Ballium spun around and read his sword.
He saw a Toa of the Green holding and Injured Toa Orde. "Sorry for startling you, but I wanted to ask. If you knew that the battle is over?"
"Ya," Balum replied, "But I felt I had to come back and bury her we..." he paused, " We were close."
"I have a safe place we can go if you want to come with?" asked the toa of Plantlife, "I'm Kanae, by the way!"
The Toa of Light knew that the Brotherhood would send forces to kill any survivors, "Shure I come with, and I'm Ballium, by the way. Nice to meet you!"
The Toa started to talk as they walked away.
