- "Like us, your blood is tainted by a little germ. The beast inside all of us. A little animal with a trillion voices spread across all layers of existence. Yours will be the loudest of ours, the chorus of the song of shadows. You wish to know your story, don’t you? it’s already been written, little one. Your destiny has been determined by the Beast within."
- ―"Mother", The Beacon
The Beasts are a group of people infected with the Beast virus, a multiversal destiny-altering plague that invades various dimensions and creates cultist-like pawns for Shadowmaster. Certain individuals with a more concentrated essence of the Beast are often referred to as Beacons.
History[]
The Beast virus's origins remain unknown, only that it had relations to and functioned in service to Shadowmaster in an unknown scheme for multiversal conquest, likely attempts to sabotage the Great Spirit Robot and the Great Beings' plans.
In several universes, the Beast virus was responsible for the corruption of the Sand Tribe on Spherus Magna and their subsequent mutation into the Vorox. It infected the Great Being Velika as he snuck aboard the Great Spirit Robot as it launched for the stars at the tail-end of the Core War. When Velika granted the Robot's inhabitants with sentience, the virus quickly began spreading itself. The path of the Beast's influence throughout Matoran history diverged from this point in the multiverse, but otherwise had a hand or was directly involved in various major events.
While most infected were unaware of their affliction, those who were dubbed themselves "Beasts" and sought out what their leaders referred to as "Beacons", individuals that had a heavy concentration of the virus's essence in their bodies and prophesied to render their home universes defenseless for Shadowmaster's conquest. Throughout the Matoran Multiverse's histories, many were believed to be Beacons, including Nidhiki, the Barraki, Tuyet, and Teridax, with some instances being true. In one such universe, Beasts suspected their Beacon to be a Toa of Plasma named Thode but determined their suspicions erroneous.
In another universe, this individual was found to be the the former bounty hunter rather coincidentally named Beacon, but he violently rejected the Beasts' attempts to recruit him. Despite the setback, this universe's Beasts became determined to try to turn him to their goals by any means necessary, even if it meant spilling his blood.
Matoran Mythology[]
In Matoran folklore, the Beast is a mysterious force considered to be the root of all evil in the Matoran Universe. Inside each being was a monster in hiding waiting for the opportune time to reveal itself and corrupt its host.
Other Universes[]
Toa Empire Alternate Universe[]
After helping Tuyet kill Lhikan, Nidhiki joined her in taking over the Matoran Universe and creating a Toa Empire. This action led to a speedy infection of many Toa, some of who were uncharacteristic in their agreement to the takeover. With its infected essentially taking over the world, the Beast was now in control over the Matoran Universe. However, the empire's defeat at the hand of rebels and a dimensionally displaced Takanuva ended the rule. In an attempt to escape upon realizing that the rebels could not be affected by its infection, the Beast focused its presence into Tuyet, who was using a Kanohi Olmak to leave the dimension. However, Takanuva tore off the mask, intending to escape the universe. Tuyet, chasing after the Toa of Light, was caught in between universes when the dimensional gateway closed and was torn in half. Tuyet's upper body, which contained the most of the Beast, was left floating in empty space, trapping this version of the virus there.
The Kingdom Alternate Universe[]
The Beast was left within the Matoran Universe when it was evacuated after Matoro failed to save Mata Nui's life. However, during Makuta Teridax's continual gaining of mass, the virus infected the enlarged Makuta. Inhabiting a large specimen, the Beast reawakened in this new host without Teridax's awareness. The virus was exterminated along with its sentience when Teridax absorbed Matoro, overwhelming his mind and killing him.
Okoto[]
The Beast virus managed to infect Makuta when the young Mask Maker in training rescued his brother Ekimu from an ambush by Shadow Realm demons, which were in actuality the Beast virus attempting to invade this universe. While weak in power compared to its parts in universe with the Great Spirit Robot, it managed to convert Makuta into this universe's Beacon and influenced him to become jealous over his brother's skill, driving him to create the Mask of Ultimate Power and become demonized in Okotan history.
Trivia[]
- The Beasts were BionicleChicken's first attempt at creating a species, but after a while he eventually grew disillusioned with the idea of a virus that caused evil in BIONICLE's canon. After several stories featuring them, they were revamped to be a more simple cult that worshipped an aspect of CBW's roster of characters.
- The Beasts' wearing of the Kanohi Hau Mistika variant was initially an easter egg referencing BionicleChicken's self-moc, who at the time was a non-entity existing purely as an inside joke or representation of the user. After the creation of The Beacon, the usage of the mask ended up having a story purpose in the end.
- The concept was inspired by the Marvel villain Sublime.
