The Astray Alternate Universe was an alternate universe in which Matoran were present on Bota Magna. Further differences are that Makuta Daxos joined Teridax’s Convocation, Toa Tuyet disappeared, and Velika was transformed into a Toa.
History[]
Early Differences[]
The earliest divergence from the Prime Reality is in the creation of the Matoran species, where the Great Beings took greater inspiration from the Agori and Glatorian species. As such, most Matoran types are not limited to one gender; the sole exception is Psionics, which is limited to female Matoran as a result of Orde’s failure to control the Zyglak. Further, this universe's Velika granted the denizens of the Matoran Universe with the capacity for love in addition to their improved sentience. He developed this virus much earlier, allowing it to infect the Matoran before the Great Spirit Robot was completed.
During the the Shattering, several Matoran, Toa, and Turaga were stranded in the area that would become Bota Magna. These particular individuals were mostly experiments or prototypes, and developed a markedly different culture to their brethren onboard the Great Spirit Robot. Vakavus, a Toa of Gravity, is one such individual.
Around 60,000 years ago, during the Time Slip, Makuta Teridax announced his plan to overthrow Mata Nui. Unlike the Prime Reality, Makuta Daxos supported Teridax’s goals. As a result, the warrior-scientist did not die, and maintained his assigned region. During this time, he would explore the island of Voya Nui, researching legends pertaining to the Mask of Life. In addition, the Makuta would take on the Matoran Velika as an assistant. Daxos would eventually stop coming to the island, and later died during the Great Cataclysm.
Around 2,500 years prior to the Great Cataclysm, the Toa Mangai Tuyet was taken by a Botar from another reality, and was thus incapable of murdering Matoran. Her disappearance was commonly attributed to the Dark Hunter “Eliminator”. Tuyet is still fondly remembered as a hero by many.
Despite these differences, the Astray Universe lacked any other major differences compared to the Prime Reality, up until the Reformation of Spherus Magna.
Post-Reformation[]
After the Reformation, the megacity of Atero Nui was constructed along the Skrall River. The city campaigned itself as a unified force; however, its unity was not so easily achieved, as many tribal qualities continued in the separated districts. With tensions rising, peace talks were arranged between various factions, seeking to create a leading council. The hero Takanuva served as a mediator, while Turaga Dume and Raanu served as temporary leaders.
With so few Toa remaining, the Toa Magna Initiative was proposed: Matoran who had proven themselves would be granted Toa Stones and trained to protect Atero Nui. Notable Matoran included those from Mata Nui guards, the Voya Nui Resistance, and Mahri Nui sentries.
Unable to return to his original body, Velika was forced to remain inside his Matoran disguise; though he would later be transformed into a Toa. The former Great Being began forming a secret empire, believing that his rule would serve the planet better. In his efforts, he attempted to recreate the Makuta species and sought control of the Battera robots.
More recently, the Turaga Ohri charted an expedition, searching for secrets left behind by the Great Beings. Begrudgingly given the opportunity by the Council, his caravan began their journey. Facing various threats from the wild, the Expedition would eventually reach the White Quartz Mountains, where they would briefly split up in order to explore. Each smaller group would be besieged by Vorox sent by Velika; one such group of Matoran would become the Toa Vandern and fend off the Vorox forces. Afterwards, the rookie Toa ran deeper into the wilderness, hoping to lead the remaining Vorox away from the rest of the expedition. Upon reuniting, the Expedition quickly left the area, and chose to return to Atero Nui.

Cultural Differences[]
The Astray Universe featured different cultural beliefs compared to the Prime Reality. Firstly, the Matoran belief in Mata Nui as a religious figure was more pronounced; although many lost faith after both the Matoran Civil War and the Great Cataclysm, theorizing that Mata Nui had died or abandoned the universe. In addition, a separate belief arose, centered around the symbolism of one's Kanohi. Matoran tended to remain with their original Kanohi, believing that Mata Nui had given it to them as a sign. However, others would often change their masks, seeking to represent their goals or mental state through their choice of Kanohi. These religious beliefs were less present in non-Matoran societies, as they often felt unloved by the Great Spirit.
Matoran on Bota Magna had a different cultural history; though they still believed in Mata Nui, his absence caused many to become atheistic. In addition, several of their Kanohi and armor took on a different form, inspired by the Glatorian around them.
Dume's name is also pronounced different in this reality, much closer to the word "Doom".
