The Kanohi Ananko is the Mask of Retrocognition. Its usage is widespread, and it is classified as a Time power.

It allows the user to either see with perfect clarity events in their own recent past, or the recent pasts of any being they touch. However, extended use of the mask without breaks can put a mental strain on the bearer, as well as potentially damage their understand of causality.

This mask acts as a counterpart to the Mask of Psychometry, but may only be used on living beings as opposed to inanimate objects.

History

As society within the Matoran Universe blossomed and expanded following the Great Spirit Robot's launch, mask makers across the universe honed and refined their skills and began to craft new designs. These masks were not neccessarily as directly relevant to the maintenance of the Great Spirit, but served some now-lost purpose within the newly born civilization.

The Kanohi Ananko was one such mask. It was crafted as a much later counterpart to the Mask of Psychometry, allowing the user to perceive the past of living beings as opposed to inanimate objects.

Makuta Bitil's many experiments with accessing the timestream involved users of the Kanohi Ananko. His own Toa Hagah of Iron was lost to the timestream in one such experiment, where Bitil forced the Toa to use a modified, damaged Ananko to try to see the past, present and future all at once. The resultant temporal backlash almost destroyed them all.

Timestorm Universe

Makuta Bitil continued his experiments for thousands of years, eventually creating a device that, combined with a Kanohi Ananko, could accurately events in the past up to the creation of the first Kanohi Ananko, though this came at the expense of the user's mind. Luckily for Bitil, he had plenty of prisoners to force to use the contraption. His next challenge is seeing further than the first Ananko's creation.

Toa Empire Universe

The Kanohi Ananko was often employed by Tuyet's Toa Empire as an additional interrogation tool. However, she and her officers often found that they preferred "traditional" methods of interrogation more, and so the Ananko was considered a last resort.

• The Kanohi Ananko was created for BIONICLE Generations, first appearing in the Kanohi Guidebook released on April 3rd 2020.
• Its name is derived from Ananke, the Greek goddess of inevitability.
• The mask's effect on its user's perception of causality is inspired by the events of the audio drama Ars Paradoxica.
