Aescela is a Po-Matoran from Mahri Nui. She is a member of the Mahri Nui Sentinels, the militia created by Dekar to protect the city from exterior threats.

History[]

Aescela spent much of her early life on the island of Balfe Nui in the southernmost region of the Matoran Universe, living primarily in the main city on the island. She was an artist, until the Visorak Horde began to ravage the island. She chose to join up with the resistance group trying to fight back against the Horde. Eventually, Aescela was critically injured in battle, and hoping to spare her their seemingly inevitable defeat, the resistance opted to send her and several other wounded Matoran to Karzahni. There, her body was rebuilt to be smaller and weaker, and instead of sending her home, she was send to the most uninhabited part of the Southern Continent to hide Karzahni's failure to properly restore her.

Aescela lived in the region that would become Voya Nui when the Great Cataclysm hurled it up to the surface of the Endless Ocean. She lived had there for many years before the Cataclysm, wondering what had become of her home. She attempted several expeditions to try and return home, but the journey always proved too difficult and dangerous and she was forced to turn back. After the Cataclysm, she halted these expeditions after she realized there was no way back to the rest of the Matoran Universe.

After the Cataclysm, Aescela immediately started helping her fellow Matoran acclimate to their new situation, using her skills from her time with the resistance to defend against dangerous Rahi and helping to establish the Cliffside Village. Eventually, she moved to the growing city of Mahri Nui, believing that its vision was a path to a new life for the Matoran of Voya Nui. But disaster struck yet again, and Mahri Nui was shaken loose from the island by a powerful earthquake and sank into the Voya Nui Bay.

Life in Mahri Nui[]

Aescela was one of the survivors of the initial disaster, and was among the first to join Dekar's Mahri Nui Sentinels, a militia created to protect the inhabitants of the now sunken city from the strange new threats found at the bottom of the sea.

Ten years later, Aescela was one of Matoran present in the Council meeting when Gemini interrupted with the news that Kyrehx had been attacked by Vampire Squid. Dekar sent her and Sarda with Idris to make sure Matoran were staying away from the edges of the Air Domes to prevent further attacks.

When Kyros's hut caught fire, Aescela accompanied Gemini and Mati to figure out what was going on and helped put out the fire before going to search for Lemiddus. She was called off of the search when Idris noticed a massive creature approaching the city and marshalled the Sentinels to defend against it. She was paired with Paka, tasked with protecting him while he used a Zamor Sphere launcher loaded with spheres filled with air, which Kaira and Lemiddus had discovered was toxic to creatures in this part of the Endless Ocean. She guarded Paka while he tried to fix a jam with the launcher. When the rest of the Sentinels retreated to the hopeful safety of the Air Domes, Aescela and Paka chose to remain in the water and distract the creature to buy time. This brave action cost Aescela her leg and Paka his life, but bought time enough for Glace to arrive and assisted Idris in killing the creature.

Aescela was recovered from the battlefield after the fight and taken to Kaira's hut, where her wounds were treated and her leg was amputated.

Personality and Traits[]

Aescela is headstrong and often foolhardily brave, very much fulfilling the Po-Matoran stereotypes. She directs this energy for the betterment of others, always striving to use her capabilities to help and protect the others around her. Her injury has not slowed her down in the slightest, and she is still striving to find ways to help the Matoran of Mahri Nui as she heals.

Powers and Equipment[]

As a Po-Matoran, Aescela possesses an increased physical hardiness and strength. In addition, she is an expert in close-quarters combat, easily one of the best fighters in the city, taking to Dekar's underwater hunting tactics with ease.

After Mahri Nui sunk into the Voya Nui bay, the small amount of mutagen she was exposed to gave her a stronger, sleeker form more suited to her new environment. During her battle with the Gadunka, her leg was impaled and needed to be amputated, causing her to adopt the use of a crutch while walking. Aescela wears a powerless brown Kanohi Pakari, the Mask of Strength. She wields twin Electro-Blades.

Trivia[]

Aescela was originally created by Viro13, who generously allowed DeltaStriker to use her in Rock Bottom.
While Po-Matoran typically present as masculine in the Afterverse, much like the Core Universe, Aescela comes from the far south of the Matoran Universe, far from the more rigid and binary societal structures of Metru Nui. In the southern parts of the Matoran Universe, gender presentation is not as strictly defined by Matoran sub-species as it is in Metru Nui and the Northern Continent. So despite breaking the gender norms for Po-Matoran, Aescela would not describe herself as transgender, as she has never presented as masculine.
